11 injured as lightning strikes Paris park

Source: AFP

Paris (AFP) - Eleven people, most of them children, were injured Saturday when lightning struck a birthday party in a Paris park, officials said, adding that six of the victims were seriously injured.

Police said eight children and three adults were hurt when the storm hit as they were holding the celebrations in Parc Monceau in northwest Paris.

"They had taken shelter under a tree," said Paris official Karen Taieb.

Three of the children and one adult had life-threatening injuries, the Paris force said, with another child and another adult also seriously injured. The children were aged between 7 and 14.

Kids these days don't appreciate what it's like waking up every morning with a Fallout scenario in your mind, except that it could be real and not a game.

I think even stone age people knew not to hide under trees in a lightning storm. It's always the tall things that get hit.

2. Wow. They hid underneath a tree. That really is a bad thing to do.

I've been out running when a thunderstorm hit, and my first instinct is to find any kind of cover, but I was near home so I just scrambled home instead of fleeing for a tree.

There is little research on the physical effects of lightning strikes since they are so difficult to reproduce.
