HENDERSON, KY (WFIE) -
An arrest has been made after 160 Memorial Day crosses were damaged early Saturday in Henderson.
Police say a car driven by 27-year-old Anthony Burrus, of Henderson, drove through the display of crosses in Central Park around 6 a.m.
Officers say Burris denied causing the damage, but said he was driving a 1979 Ford Thunderbird on Saturday morning. He told officers he left the car at McDonald's on South Green Street because it stopped running.
When officers found the car, it had pieces of a cross and ground stake embedded in the tires.
Police found Burris at his sisters apartment in the 2600 block of Zion Road. He was arrested and taken to the Henderson County Detention Center.
Volunteers were able to get around 140 of the crosses back in the ground. While those will need some repairs, the others were completely destroyed.

(35,300 posts)The McDonald's is 2 1/2 blocks from the park and a bit more than 2 miles from where he was found at his sister's.
The park's a few feet closer to his sister's than the McDonald's, FYI, and I assume the car was found close to the park.
I like Google maps.
Wait, he's 27 and 5' 5"? (Oh, crap, now somebody's going to label me a sizist.)

(1,604 posts)I'd make him fix the damage and write an apology to the family of each cross damaged. Jail time and fines won't change negative attitudes for actions like this.

(889 posts)Jail time wouldn't help here. Neither would a fine.
My suggestion: Make him listen to stories about those soldiers. How they were killed, who they left behind. Then have him fix those broken crosses.

(2,474 posts)While this specific offense doesn't merit life in prison, it is indicative of a personality that will eventually get there.
The only unfortunate part is that someone else will likely pay the price before he gets there.
Max him out, prefer hard labor and use it as a reference when he screws up again to justify another max punishment.

(26,281 posts)that arent violent need to be used as object lessons and by that I mean they should be given 20 to 40 hours of community service every week for the next 10 years doing things like picking up trash on the side of the road out in public wearing a neon green and neon pink striped suit with day glow orange shoes.

(26,281 posts)having him have to do community service for the next 10 years lets him pay back the community.

(35,300 posts)Probably not a "I did it while under the influence" sort of alibi.
(As though willfully depriving yourself of full agency in any way provides a justification. You voluntarily render yourself unable to stop yourself from doing something stupid, as far as I'm concerned by taking whatever the substance is voluntarily you explicitly and voluntarily accept all the consequences. Now, if you're doped unawares or against your will, then you've had much of your responsibility and capacity stripped from you. Yes, that does make most drunk driving premeditated in my book.)

(12,882 posts)I'm not napping under a cross - yet. But the thing I was supposedly protecting when I served was a justice system that protected those not able to defend themselves. While it looks like this fella may well be to blame for this insult, let me remind us that there's plenty of folks walking amongst us who have mental instabilities and still manage to function at some level in our society.
If it was a prank or a drunken detour - he needs to pay - by whatever means is deemed appropriate. But to just summarily call for a lynching - nah - that ain't right. The better thing would've been for those 129 crosses to never have been necessary in the first place. The worse crime is sending off young American citizens to do battle while so many of us sip our Starbucks or take our pet for a casual walk while never giving that mounting tally of crosses a second thought. When's the last time you penned a note to your reps (or the president) to tell of your disgust for the constant meat grinder we send innocent kids into?
