BEIJING: Animal rights activists demanding end to the slaughter and eating of dogs at a Chinese festival today delivered a petition with 11 million signatures to authorities in Beijing.
The two dozen activists were accompanied by dogs and unveiled banners with pictures of the animals above the message "I'm not your dinner" as they presented the petition at the representative office of Yulin city, where the festival is held.
The annual festival, which is set to begin on June 21, sees residents of the southern city consume dog meat with thousands of dogs expected to be slaughtered.

(67,420 posts)I'm a vegetarian (like you, I'm guessing?). And I feel the same way, very much so. I won't go into it further because, for some reason I can't understand, other people's vegetarianism upsets some (not most, of course) people who like to eat meat, and I'm just barely starting to get over the primaries and am looking forward to DU's becoming a friendlier place again.
But there's something about companion animals that makes eating them particularly repellent. We've bred them not only to be docile but to actually love us. There is no animal more loyal than a dog. (And some cats ) Betraying that trust is just too disgusting for words. It adds sociopathy to cruelty.
But again, I agree with you 100%.

(34,582 posts)why do dogs get a pass over a cow or pig. Hell, pigs are more intelligent than dogs

(20,219 posts)People who think celebrations of cruelty are joke material or think it's funny to mock people who care about it.
Some people (not me) think trans mocking is funny, which I'd bet you would stand against, and want allies too.......some people only seem to get their caring up when it's their personal issue.

(6,017 posts)My point is that people are deciding that because it is dogs and not one of the animals we factory farm here, it's inherently different.
It's not.
I was mocking the people who say it's wrong to do that to dogs - while figuratively eating a hamburger, which statistically likely came from a factory farm. Some are focusing on that aspect (that it's dogs) rather than the cruelty, I fear simply because of cultural bias.

(20,219 posts)Yes, I agree....the suffering we humans inflict on...everything. All I can do is the best I can, myself, and it's damn imperfect anyway.
Then there are the trundling masses, who don't bother to think past the latest bling...and I can't change that.

(27,820 posts)I feel sorry for all the animals in China..especially the angora rabbits who have their fur cruelly ripped off them every three months or so, even though there are other ways to "collect" the fur.

(128 posts)but 11 million people are less than 1% of their total population. I love animals, but I'm trying to explain the problem there.
