HOUSTON An officer-involved shooting left one man dead early Saturday morning in southeast Houston.
The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. Saturday on Cullen Boulevard near Ward Street. Police say two officers were on routine patrol, driving up Cullen Boulevard when they saw a man in the middle of the street armed with a revolver. The officers immediately came to a stop and stepped out of the vehicle.
Police then gave multiple commands to the man to drop the weapon, as did a witness standing next to him. According to police, the man pointed the gun up and then at the officers.
The officers both discharged their weapons and struck the man. Authorities say he died at the scene.

(290 posts)If the bystander weren't related to the situation in some way, I can't imagine the cops letting some random guy jump into a situation like that.

(112,236 posts)but what other choice did the police officers have in that instance?
The original story that I read on DU was implied that the man was not carrying a weapon and that the cops were being over-zealous.

(153,169 posts)there are real problems but I'm sure it's no picnic being a cop in this gun humping nation

If I were a cop I would be scared shitless too knowing the good guy with a gun and everyone else was more armed than me.

(160,542 posts)We will have to huddle in our houses praying all those burglars with guns aren't going to blow us all up.
We're .... Doomed from here to eternity
Lord have mercy on such as we.....
Awwwwww, we just can't go on any more.... Sob. We're just lost without some guns.
To be extra safe, buy extra guns! Try growing extra arms to use for shooting more.

(50,277 posts)long gun to a cop after the shooting started. He assumed, rightly, that he would be mistaken for the bad guy and shot. I suspect the guy you work with loves the macho feel of having a gun more than the actual prospect of using it to save a life. Chances are, if the worst case scenario happened, he'd pee his pants and hide in a closet.

(2,642 posts)A long gun with a scope would be far more effective than the officers handgun.

(50,277 posts)he was rightly worried that if his brother was spotted with the gun he'd be shot, no questions asked. I'm betting the brother saved the gun-toting brother's life.

(11,841 posts)with a LOT more guns out there now than then. And other gun crimes are down even more than that. And the rate was even higher before '93.
But we have 24 hr news & internet now to constantly show the same crime over & over again and talk to 50 different people about how they feel about it.
Certainly agree with your last sentence though, for sure.
