Democratic Convention Host Chair Ed Rendell: Trump Is Right On Trade And China

Source: BuzzFeed

Former Gov. Ed Rendell says Donald Trump's message on trade is largely correct, but that his tone is sometimes wrong on the subject.

Rendell, who is the chair of the Democratic convention host committee, made the comments on SiriusXM radio's The Dean Obeidallah Show.

"The interesting thing is, I talk about China and the fact that China took advantage of us in trade and cost Pennsylvania some significant jobs, and I quoted Donald Trump in the book," Rendell said, noting Trump backed him heavily when he ran for governor.

Rendell's 2012 book praises Trump as "a friend" who is right on China.

"You know all that Donald Trump says isn't wrong," continued Rendell. "It's the way he says it — and there are many things he does say that's wrong. But he's right about China. We have for some reason not stood up to China. We've allowed them to manipulate their currency, which gives their businesses tremendous advantage in selling to America. They came in here and tried to dump low-priced, subsidized steel pipe to get rid of the steel pipe industry in the U.S."

It's common knowledge by now that outsourcing, cheap imports, and even illegal labor were all very much a part of The Donald's business model (such as it was).

Though given Trump's record as a businessman, he should be the last to complain about how corrupt trade deals are selling this country down the river.

After all, he's been partying on that riverboat for years!

about neo-liberalism is alive and well, and in two weeks we can all sit back and enjoy the program of how a "legacy is more important" than that of reality on "trade deal's" and how it is going to be mentioned or not mentioned with that "legacy"

Because I feel like I am going to be watching a rerun of past performances on the adoption of a platform that is missing one really key ingredient on "trade deals" , now matter how they try to word smith it

Just all the neighbors!

By the way - 'currency manipulation' is a two way street. You believe Fed and Treasury policy doesn't impact the 'value' of our currency?

I am a little new to all this commenting, but this seems like the very worst time for a Democrat to say this. I thought I liked Ed.. but I guess not.

Howard Dean is a lobbyist for the pharmaceutical companies now, right?

And they are both tight with Hillary, right?

I was for Bernie, but always had a spot for Hillary. But it seems like she is in the pocket way farther than I thought.

Am I wrong, missing something?????

Hillary Clinton of being in the pocket of anything regarding what he himself said. It makes little to no sense to me.
Please support Democrats instead of trying to cast suspicion.

Welcome to DU.

Rendell often says dumb stuff like this. It's in no way reflective of Howard Dean - or Hillary Clinton, for that matter.

Edited to add, "This is a guy who does not want to raise the minimum wage. In fact, he has said that he thinks wages in America are too high.

But he does want to give hundreds of billions of dollars in tax breaks to the top three-tenths of 1 percent.” Senator Bernie Sanders

Everything is turned on its head.

China didn't "take" any jobs. China can't "dump" anything on our markets.

Mexico didn't "take" any jobs. Mexico can't "dump" anything on our markets.

They need the active support of people and corporations which care only about profits and welcome those deals with drooling spreadsheets.

Takata didn't close American airbag factories. The American owner did that.
