Pro-abortion rights groups give Kaine nod of approval

Source: The Hill

July 22, 2016, 09:07 pm

Major pro-abortion rights groups moved quickly to applaud Hillary Clinton's vice presidential pick Sen. Tim Kaine, looking past his more conservative opinions on the issue to downplay what is seen as a big weakness on the left.

NARAL Pro-Choice America sent out a statement immediately after Clinton announced Kaine as her running mate, acknowledging some of his past remarks about personal opposition to abortion and record before reaching the U.S. Senate.

"While Senator Kaine has been open about his personal reservations about abortion, he’s maintained a 100% pro-choice voting record in the U.S. Senate. He voted against dangerous abortion bans, he has fought against efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, and he voted to strengthen clinic security by establishing a federal fund for it," NARAL President Ilyse Hogue said in the statement.

She said that voting for abortion rights despite personal beliefs underlines the group's message."This is core part of what it means to be pro-choice – supporting everyone’s individual decision making," the statement read.

on Senator Kaine these 2 days, and what I really like is the issues
of competence and morality seem to keep coming up. He thinks. Deeply.
He has good reasons for what he does, and there is often a moral element
that is subtle but explicitly stated, and it is not a raging crusading morality
like a Fundamentalist might have, or a sick dripping morality of a do-gooder
who's really lining his own pockets, it's just simple and personal with an eye
toward the impact of something on real people. He recognizes the power of
government, but it's not a heavy-handed power. Pragmatic common sense
progressive. Sanity and competence is something in the Age of Trump, maybe
some of the common folk who live quiet lives will understand. It might need some
tweaking to get him fully animated for the campaign trail.

And thank you so much for actually reading about him before rushing to judgment.
He really is a good man.
And this is a good choice.

There are a number of Democratic Catholics who have chosen to hold their tongue versus those like Stupak, who were virulently anti-choice and went out of their way to block the right of women to choose.

5. Pro-choice rather than pro-abortion

I'm a pro-choice Catholic as well. It should be safe, legal, rare, and entirely up to the woman to choose.

I don't think anyone is actually pro-abortion. It's more of a last resort and probably a very difficult choice for most.

Why why why do they insist on calling it pro-abortion. Even Keith Olberman used to call it pro-abortion. Even women who have an abortion are probably not pro-abortion. It a woman's right to choose in the most difficult CHOICE of her life. Pro-choice people. Please.

He was a devout Catholic, but he knew very well that his personal position, based on religious beliefs, was not right for everyone. And tell me he wasn't a true Liberal.

9. As Governor Kaine signed into law the Marshall-Newman Amendment, which denied

marriage rights to LGBT after promising to veto it. He said his personal views would not cause him to support that law, but in the end he supported that law. I hope he's more honest about this issue than he was about LGBT rights.

It's very sad to see so many of my peers heap praise on a man who signed anti gay legislation without any reservations at all, he's just a good man who stood in the way of equality. It's an interesting and frightening definition of what it means to be a good person.

13. #7 - FALSE - voter initiative which the governor did not sign

The governor did not sign it and could not have stopped it.

SB 526 Constitutional amendment; marriage may exist only between a man and woman.

Constitutional amendment (voter referendum); marriage. Provides for a referendum at the November 2006 election on approval of a proposed constitutional amendment to define marriage. The proposed amendment provides that "only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions." The proposed amendment also prohibits the Commonwealth and its political subdivisions from creating or recognizing "a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance, or effects of marriage." Further, the proposed amendment prohibits the Commonwealth or its political subdivisions from creating or recognizing "another union, partnership, or other legal status to which is assigned the rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of marriage." This bill is identical to HB 101.

I guess it takes lies to convert a good person into a bad one in your world.

10. Using "Pro-Abortion" in lieu of "Pro-Choice" is employing RW terminology.

Don't do it and don't cry that the RW-leaning Hill did it first.

support for three abortion restrictions."

He backs a parental consent law in Virginia which has a judicial bypass. He supports a ban on "partial birth abortions so long as there is an exception for the life and health of the mother". He also favors an "informed consent provision" in Virginia which requires abortion providers to "give women information about a whole series of things, the health consequences, et cetera, and information about adoption."

"Those, I have supported," said Kaine. "But I don't think ultimately we ought to be criminalizing abortion."

It should always referred to as "Pro-Choice". The Neo-con Christian Death Cult uses that ugly brush too affectively.
