Nevada Becomes One of Trump's Big Hopes for Swing State Win
Source: ABC News
"Nevada's a picture of where the country's at," said Yvanna Cancela, political director of the Culinary Union, which represents nearly 60,000, mostly immigrant workers in casinos and hotels on the Strip. "It's increasingly diverse but the ideas of nationalism, open borders are very much at play here."
The economy has recovered since the recession. The unemployment rate is down to 6.5 percent from 13.7 percent in 2010. While home prices have doubled since 2012, they are well below their 2007 peak, and many Las Vegas residents live in subdivisions dotted with still-unoccupied houses.
Nevada also has one of the lowest rates of college education in the country, with only 23 percent of its population having graduated college, giving Trump a reservoir of noncollege graduates that traditionally form his base. And the state's anti-establishment streak and rebellious culture may prove a good fit for the brash New York developer and reality show star.
"In Nevada, we have this mindset of it's us versus the world," said Charles Munoz, Trump's state director. "It's the perfect storm of policy and messaging."

One thing that is not mentioned is that Sheldon Adelson has been buying up local media properties, so the articles appearing in the papers could tend to reflect Sheldon's view of the world.
http://www.politico.com/media/story/2016/02/sheldon-adelson-tightens-grip-on-review-journal-004384
After a brief spell of normalcy seemed to return to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, all bets are now off.
A new publisher has appeared overnight at the paper, a new editor will be installed as soon as Friday, and, sources tell me, stories involving new owner Sheldon Adelson are being reviewed, changed or killed almost daily.
Further, the newsroom is abuzz with word of a list of a half a dozen or so journalists whose work has rubbed Adelson the wrong way over the years, and who may soon be targeted for departure in what one insider describes as a house-cleaning.
In addition to such departures, the Review-Journal may see a flurry of resignations sooner than later.

(53,743 posts)is Latino and they are NOT voting for effin Trump. And neither are progressive whites, Asians, African Americans and the rest of the Obama coalition that carried the state twice for Obama.
The rest of the state may favor Trump but there just aren't enough votes up there.
And that article on the paper is 7 months old, what's up with including outdated material to make it seem relevant?

(45,380 posts)The Nevada economy was worse in 2012 when they voted to re-elect Obama. The state has a lot of latinos and more of them have turned 18 and registered to vote since then. A lot of immigrants have become US citizens and registered to vote since then.
And the libertarian minded folks have a popular libertarian candidate from a nearby state to vote for too. I think Johnson could tip several western states to us.

(34,661 posts)that grows on you. Our worst asset is Sheldon Adelson and his pal Steve Wynn. And running close behind is Phil Ruffkin and his Trump Hotel Group. The locals don't do the strip unless it is their Employment, that is for the Tourist's.
As far as Sheldon, what a mess, his family bought the Review Journal as well as another Newspaper group that controls all the papers in Nevada. RJ has always been a right wing bird cage liner, now it is a total joke. Talk about slant to a news story, holy cow, this sucker has tipped every story on it's head. Only thing going is the Sun Newspaper published by Brian Greenspun(who is a major Hillary backer)is published and printed in the same shop as the RJ and distributed via the RJ. Sad to say the Sun is only a 4-6 page insert.
You will never see a negative story about any Casino or any type of crime on the Strip in the RJ. Our will you ever see a story about Rethug corruption in Adelson's rag. Moonie Times would be the best comparative.

(27,771 posts)Do you think it would do any good to ask Brian Greenspun to start his own newspaper?
Could George Soros and others possibly fund starting a newspaper in Vegas?

(34,661 posts)and that is where the money is. Job Printing, handbills, inserts and of course,Political Mailers. Because of the declining Readers of the RJ,Greenspun is going all in with Digital. One of the fee sites with out a pay wall. In the short term we have to get the real news form outside the state sources if it is not in the Sun. Understand Greenspun was offered the RJ,but his group looked at it as a loser and it is looking more and more as that. Remember,Aedlson owns two other papers that he gives away, one in Israel and one in New Hampshire I believe. Both right wing brutal rags.

(27,771 posts)It's too bad Greenspun didn't take over the RJ anyway, just to keep asshole Republican billionaires like Adelson from owning it, and using it to influence Nevada voters.

(34,661 posts)with the cost to run such a operation, the Greenspun family has a created one of the premier reputations. And bulk advertisers stay with them year in and year out.
Seems to me Greenspun has another Hillary fund raiser as well as Democratic Party fund raiser in the next couple of weeks.

Are there any "alternative weekly' newspapers in Las Vegas?
If I owned part or all of a print shop, and if there were no "alternative weekly" newspapers,
then I'd start one.
They're much less expensive to run than a regular daily newspaper, and they serve a need by running articles that the right-wing media won't run.
Las Vegas has more than 600,000 people, and if there is no alternative weekly newspaper, someone should start one, imo....if not Greenspun, then someone else, or perhaps a group of Democrats or "left-of-center" las Vegans. (Is Las Vegans the correct term?)
Wellstone ruled
(34,661 posts)Neighborhood types and only in certain areas.
Vegas Valley has over two million in population. And Las Vegans is correct. Our Broadcast Media is about as Right Wing as it comes,it will give Fake Noise a run for it's money. When you have the likes of Nextstar Media,Scrippts-Howard,and Sinclair owning everything, and this all has gone down in the last couple of years. Used to have a CBS affiliate that did a fantastic job of News Coverage. Zero slant, then CBS sold of several of their properties four years ago and the buyers are a group of Conservative Rethugs and a couple of Blue Dog Dems.
And you couple that with Adelson and his control of all the print media in the state, you understand the uphill battle a Liberal Group has to get any message out. It is the Levers of Power and the Rethugs has it all sewed up at this time. Worst to come will happen in a few weeks with the last session of our State Legislature Convenes ,most of the Tea Baggers lost out in the Primaries, and you can just imagine the tons of negative crap coming down the pike. It is not going to be pretty to say the least, especially with a Governor that missed out on his chance to be a Senator or Vice Presidential Candidate.

(27,771 posts)...either start a new Las Vegas daily newspaper, or a new "alternative" weekly, or buy a TV station.....It just doesn't seem right that there is no liberal voice, either in print or on TV, in an area with that many people.
Those casino magnates can't all be right-wingers, can they?
How the hell did Harry Reid ever get elected?
Wellstone ruled
(34,661 posts)With Harry Reid that's a different game. Has to do with Reid was the first Gambling Commissioner in Nevada after the State cleaned out the Mob. Old Harry knows where to find the bodies so to speak. Harry gets his real support from the Culinary Union and in that, the Casino owners will never piss him off.
Yes we have a ton of heavy hitters, but their is a pecking order in this town and lines people never cross. If we Dems retake the Legislature, then and only then will some real positive things happen. With the transient nature of our Valley,do not think anyone with the deep pockets is willing to risk funding a alternative news operation. Adelson and Wynn have a strangle hold on this town.

They also need to spend more on TV ads in Nevada.

(27,771 posts)If the Clinton campaign can "get out the vote" in a big way, including a massive voter registration drive, the millions of people who work in the Nevada casino industry can possibly tip the scales and put Nevada in the "blue" column this November.
Also, the Clinton campaign needs to work closely with the Nevada unions, asking them to help as much as they can, and spending as much as possible on TV ads exposing Trump for the lying, mentally unbalanced buffoon that he is.
