Convicted Ohio Man Jumps to Death After Being Sentenced to 13 Years

An Ohio man convicted of attempted murder escaped from a courthouse guard and jumped to his death shortly after being sentenced to 13 years in prison Friday, authorities said.
Jason Binkiewiz, 42, was pronounced dead after jumping over a banister on the third floor of a Steubenville courthouse, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla told NBC affiliate WTOV.
Binkiewiz had just been sentenced for shooting a man in the face in 2015, and was being escorted by a sheriff's deputy when he broke free and ran towards the banister, Abdalla said.
"As soon as Binkiewicz started running, Deputy Price he was on him quick enough when he reached out, he had his shirt," Abdalla said. "It wasn't good enough, and if he held on to the shirt, most likely Deputy Price would have gone over with him."

He was brave to take a dive when facing slow insanity.
I don't think I could do this.

(135,425 posts)He might have watched too many James Bond and other action films...or maybe he played video games where people can jump from absurd heights and not die.
I wouldn't assume he was in a rational frame of mind at the time he took that action, and I would not be surprised if his intent was escape, not death. He might have even thought they were on the 2nd floor, not the 3rd.
And "slow insanity?" He could use the time to take some college courses and improve himself--with good behavior he might have cut his stretch in half.

(18,497 posts)In some pictures, where you can better see his facial features, it seems possible that fetal alcohol syndrome may have been a factor.
That would definitely fit with his life-long poor impulse control including the very dramatic one that ended his life.
I am very glad he did not kill or injure someone else in this last crazed stunt.
Although all present will live with that image for the rest of their lives.
I hope no children were present.

(37,748 posts)Bravery, by its very definition entails an act which is morally praiseworthy. What exactly did he do you perceive as so admirable?

(4,159 posts)He was about to go to prison because he shot a man in the face. This is the history of a man who acts before he thinks. Poor impulse control is not courage.

Yet people tend to act like putting someone away is "weak".
If they'd rather die, why give them what they want?

(32,977 posts)there's nothing in the article that supports that conclusion. only a deliberate jump over a 3rd-floor bannister.

(35,191 posts)"gun culture" manages to combine white + uneducated + not young = NRA supporter.
That one of the largest reservoirs of "gun culture", it turns out, are not white and are young. But still uneducated. Very seldom are those included in "gun culture." Wyoming's homicide epidemic would be "gun culture"; Chicago's, certainly not. "Gun culture" folk pop up loudly until the perp's identity is known, then sometimes catapult their opinion or simply slink away.
(Is the poster you're replying to in that group? I have no idea. This is, of course, a statistical generalization, possibly flawed, based on observed instances.)

I know that's not related to this story very much. I'm just saying.
It depends, though. If I could be "homeless" and live off the land in a reasonable manner, that would be far preferable for me.
Being forced to socialize with killers and lunatics would suck.

Homeless people living in the streets have dangerous lives too.

... about your homeless experience?
How did you eat and the like? I'm wondering because I think that's where I'm headed eventually.
EDIT: I'm having trouble keeping jobs due to my eyesight. It's a retina problem that's not correctable by glasses. I'm blind in one eye already and my "good eye" slowly gets worse. Unless it gets FAR worse, I'll be unable to draw disability. My good eye is barely good enough for me to still drive at the moment. I'm using magnification software to interact here on DU. I've considered all sorts of things, including cutting out my "good eye" to qualify for disability, and even suicide, but perhaps the homeless life (if that happens) won't be so terrible after all.

I have no doubt he succeeded in what he wanted. If faced with a similar sentence I'd sure hope there was a quick way out also.

(7,496 posts)...and a bunch of them might be residing in the same place he was going. I'd guess that tends to happen with the type of people who will shoot someone else in the face.
But more than likely he reflexively chose a fatal action without thinking it through.

(32,977 posts)The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown.
His scepter shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings.
But mercy is above this sceptered sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings;
It is an attribute of God himself;
And earthly power doth then show like God's
When mercy seasons justice.

Corruption does exist in other areas, of course it does. But not like it does in Steubenville.
