(Reuters) - Opposition candidate Enrique Pena Nieto is seen winning Mexico's presidential election by a comfortable margin and restoring to power the party that ruled for much of the 20th century, according to three exit polls.
Pena Nieto, 45, led by between 8 and 11 percentage points in exit polls released by three of Mexico's main television networks after voting ended on Sunday night.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which governed Mexico for 71 years until losing in 2000, has staged a comeback behind the handsome Pena Nieto, who has pledged to open state-owned oil monopoly Pemex to foreign investors, raise tax revenue and liberalize the labor market.
The polls showed him winning around 40 percent of the vote.
Leftist rival Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was in second place with Josefina Vazquez Mota of the ruling National Action Party, or PAN, trailing in third.

Josefina Vasquez Mota is running for the PAN (Center right party) and has zero chance to win. She is from the same party as the current president
Andres Lopez Obrador, our eternal candidate... no historically candidates do not run twice, he has, is running on a left coalition including the PRD. Yup, he had it stolen from him six years ago... his chances are what chances?
Gabriel Quadri Negri is running on another coalition and nope, his chances are not good either.

July 2, 2012 (San Diego)-- Enrique Peña Nieto has been declared the winner of Mexico’s federal election yesterday. Mexico, unlike the United States, has a one-term limit for every office, from Mayor to President. His defeat of the PAN counterpart, Josefina Vazquez Mota, was not unexpected. All polling going into the election had Peña Nieto ahead by five to ten points.
What was a surprise was the taking of the House by the PRI, with their allies in the Green Party.
The Mexican system does not have single candidates run for Congressional or Senatorial offices, but instead has slates that gain office through proportional representation, not unlike many European systems. Why this matters is that over the last six years, the current President Felipe Calderón (PAN) had to fight a Congress that was utterly divided and refused to pass much of his plans. It will remain to be seen if the PAN will try to be an absolute opposition party, or a loyal opposition.
Another important marker in the cultural and political maturity of Mexico was the prompt concession by PAN candidate Mota after her third place finish.
Not surprising, Manuel Lopez Obrador with the PRD, who placed second with 32.28% of the vote—less than four percentage points behind Nieto, announced he will challenge the results of the elections as he did in 2006. In reality the margin between Obrador and Nieto is likely too large for him to overcome.

the weirdest thing is, Vincente Fox, the first PAN candidate to win the presidency-the guy who was basically marketed as the Mexican Reagan-ended up endorsing the PRI.

Thousands of police were deployed to protect the tens of millions who voted from intimidation by drug cartels at polling booths. Officials said the voting was largely peacefully.
Exit polls suggest a victory for Enrique Pena Nieto, whose PRI party ruled for decades until 2000.
His main rival is left-winger Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Mr Lopez Obrador, of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), was the runner-up in the 2006 election. He refused to recognise the victory of serving President Felipe Calderon and led street protests afterwards.

We started only three months ago, while other candidates were in campaign for years, with more resources. Why I want to thank the media for their professionalism, their transparency, and their contribution to a quality democracy. This is one of the challenges of modern mexico
I also want to think citizens who did not know me, even three months ago, and have joined us. They have liked our platform and our ideas, that they can enter national politics. Why we have launched the first liberal party in the Mexico of the 21st century, a pre requisite to advance in our development, fight against poverty, sustainability and security. That mexicans agree with our liberal views.
I want to thank New Alliance that did play with a citizen candidate, and took the risk. This was a process and adventure, and also all the ranks and New Alliance. This has been a success, that needs to be recognized by society.
Secondly I want to recognize the candidate of the PAN for recognizing a few moments ago, that she is not favored by the results and that she did not win. This attitude from one of the leaders of the great candidates needs to be recognized. We exhort as a party that AMLO conducts himself the same way as Josefina Lopez Mota. He should also concede, to end this electoral process that IFE carried out.
I need to thank and recognize IFE, that we have democratic institution that are very solid and are capable of running a solid process. And that we need to leave behind our doubts on the efficacy and transparency of our electoral process.
Finally, thank you to the media, to citizens to Nueva Aliance and IFE, for the magnificent electoral day, and I recognize Lopez Mota and again ask that AMLO acts in the same mature way.
And now we have planted the tree of Mexican Liberalism for the 21st century.

Vazquez says none of the exit polls favor her.
The candidate for President Felipe Calderon's National Action was the first woman presidential candidate for a major party.
She conceded Sunday shortly after the polls closed as exit surveya showed her trailing around 23 percent to leader Enrique Pena Nieto's roughly 40 percent.
His lead shows Mexican voters ready to return the old guard, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, to power after it was kicked out by the PAN in 2000.

The latter is a little more significant, he ran as a CITIZEN. This was the first time that this was allowed by the IFE. The Party of Nueva Alianza adopted him... and he actually said that he has helped plant the idea of Liberalism in Mexico.
Ok this needs explanation, in the Mexican tradition he is looking back to the 19th century and the ideas there, not to our version of it.

Regardless, like the council for IFE, bernardo Valdez, the only official result is the one given by the IFE. Therefore we will pay attention to the time when the IFE, COuncilor President Leonardo Valdez (IFE) will give.

Joaquin Coldwell says PRI candidate Enrique Pena Nieto will win the presidency.
He announced late Sunday that the party will await an official representative quick count before officially claiming victory. The count is expected at 11:45 p.m. local time.

But above all, thank you for voting, We estimate that voting was above 65%. This is the highest voting in the history of Mexico, We installed almost 100% of the voting booths.

There is a graphic showing the trends in the count. The legal results will need the 300 District Councils to being on the fourth and the final one for the Presidency will be issued by the Supreme Court. The PREP will continue to work for until tomorrow at 20:00 and they will publish all the "Acts"
The mexicans have ratified that elections and democracy are the only valid method to obtain political power.

The IFE has issued, and according to them, PENA Nieto, is ahead. If this is confirmed and once confirmed by the Tribunal of the Federation Pena Nieto will be the next President on December 1st. I promise to help his team in the transition of power.
He will have the solid base that we all have built. It is much that we have achieved, and please support he who will head the executive. There is a legal process, that starts on Wendesday, and we will need to review all acts, to see what the results are. Thank you with all my heart, to all who have supported us. Thank you, to those who accompany me in this night of happiness, of emotion, or celebration. I salute those who outside were waiting for the result from the fast count. That we now have precise and clear electoral results.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Mexicans all, according to the official information, the Coalition for the compromise for Mexico, will lead the next government of the Republic (cheers of yes we can), I say it with emotion and compromise and responsibity the mandate that Mexicans have given me. Today, first of July, the citizens have spoken, with clarity, voting for a change of way., thank you to all Mexicans
This Sunday Mexico changed, and the electoral day has been an authentic party of democracy, with over 49 million voting. It was Mexicans who submitted, counted the votes, I thank the over three million Mexicans who helped in this process. I thank the IFE for their professional work. I thank all the public servants who organized it. To the Citizen President I thank him for his conduct and his love for a democratic change.

I will meet with the President to set a transition team to ensure transparency, order and stability. I will also use those moths to prepare the reforms that I have promised. I will modernize the country, we need changes and we need to place the interest of the nation above all. Today, my only compromise is with all Mexicans. It is time to go from the country we are to what we can be. We will be a nation where each person can write it's own success story.

(154,021 posts)the Alianza por Mexico, which had the PRI as the majority party, also had the Partido Verde Ecologista and a third left of center party. This is a center left coalition. The Alianza Progresista, Obrador, that is the Partido del Trabajo, The PRD and another left party. It was truly a left left of center coalition. And I need to analyze the results at governor level and house and senate. It looks more like the RIGHT really lost and really lost bad.

I was living there when the infamous PRI President, Carlos Salinas de Gortari was in office, and also lived there when Calderon (PAN) was President.
What Mexico desperately needed to do was to elect Obrador.
PAN is RW. PRI is a bit worse than a Third Way corrupt sellout organization of the 1%.
PRI is a little better than PAN, but it's not good by any means.
The people of Mexico will continue to get shafted, while the politicians and 1% suck up all the wealth faster than they breathe.

(135,060 posts)MEXICO CITY -- Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the veteran leftist leader in second place in Mexico's presidential election, says he will wait for a final vote count before deciding whether to concede.
As hundreds of ardent supporters chanted and rallied in an impromptu demonstration outside a downtown hotel early Monday, Lopez Obrador took to a modest podium. His speech was brief and simple. His mood mellow.
He announced that he would not concede defeat on election night in Mexico. For many, it was an instant flashback to 2006, the last presidential election in which Lopez Obrador refused to accept defeat, declaring fraud and sparking a series of protests that paralyzed Mexico City.
"The position that I assume is to wait," Lopez Obrador said before media and supporters in a ballroom at a downtown Hilton Hotel. "We need to know all the results. We're going to wait for those results before making any final positions. There is no final word yet."

(154,021 posts)the exit polls are as relaible as any international standard. What they call the "cuenta rapidda", which is 10% of the votes cast used to declare the election are a statistical exercise and when you have 5% or so between candidates reliable.
What they said, after both Mota and Quadri conceded was that "this was a sign of a mature democracy and praised Gore about it, even when we all knew that Bush stole it. He did to for the well being of the country." They recommended people find that speech on you tube. Those my friend, where the worlds of the broadcasters for Radio Red in Mexico City.,

This is in Spanish but you should have no problem with it, nadin. For people who don't read Spanish, it still may be interesting in comparison to the pots and pans that we saw in the 2006 protests.

(154,021 posts)And how many in the media and polling agencies were involved? You realize the polling was so intense...and from multiple sources, some foreign. Anonymous is using a lone evidence you posted last night.
Look, six years ago AMLO had it stolen. But this time you are asking that I buy into a conspiracy of literally thousands, before I even include the IFE, or the PRI or the PAN or the cops.
I know, I know, it is hard for some, including the kids who started the catcalls at the Ibero when we were down there to visit mom, and promised to march against Peña Nieto that same day over twitter if he won the election, to accept that yes...the PRI won. I get it...but every poll leading to this had him five to ten ahead, every poll. Exit polls matched results that night pretty closely. So how big is the conspiracy?
By the way, we even considered going to get photos and interviews from them at Televisa, we were there, but it's Mexico city traffic.

(154,021 posts)Including who is doing what. I know the actors pretty damn well and while taking tours we made no bones we were foreign press. So yes, we had guides go into things they usually don't. Our talk at the UNAM the day the march happened downtown, the student mobilization, was actually fascinating.
That's the country I was born at. I have family, believe yiu me, been following this like a hawk.
Six years ago it was stolen. AMLO isn't doing any favors to the hard left. If he wants to get any standing, he should concede and step down. He's just hardening the bad blood against him. To paraphrase a few people. "Ese hombre solo le importa el.".
This is from the damn ground.
And the kids, they don't want a return to the past, yup Peña Nieto was endorsed b Salinas, but damn... AMLO DID NOT HAVE THIS STOLEN THIS TIME.

MEXICO CITY — Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party is marching back into the presidential palace bolstered by its control of a raft of state governorships and a good standing in Congress.
But its mandate is much shakier than the party had predicted before Sunday's election, reflecting the nagging suspicions with which many Mexicans regard the PRI and complicating President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto's ability to execute an ambitious reform program.
He will have to negotiate with rival parties, including a newly empowered left, and will not have the free hand he might have expected as he pursues initiatives such as opening up the massive state oil company, Pemex, to foreign investment. Resistance from the opposition, as well as the old guard of his party and the unions that backed him, could block reforms and condemn Mexico to status quo and economic malaise.
"His mandate is clearly weaker than expected," said Carlos Ramirez, a Mexico analyst for the New York-based Eurasia Group.
"He will be in a tough spot. The view inside the party was that they were going to win by a landslide.... Peña will have to choose his battles because he's likely to encounter resistance from within his coalition."

Actually the PRD was not that strengthened, that's far from my read. Yup, spent part of the day going through electoral data
Of course analyst realizes this is the first time in six years that either house is in the control of the same party as the President, right?
