PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Officials in Flroida say a retired astronaut died in a jet ski crash off Pensacola Beach.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials say 51-year-old Capt. Alan G. Poindexter was riding on a jet ski with his 22-year-old son Sunday afternoon when his 26-year-old son crashed into them with another jet ski.
The Pensacola News Journal reports Zachary Poindexter hit the rear of the jet ski, knocking his father into the water.
Wildlife agency spokesman Stan Kirkland says Poindexter was pulled from the water and taken to the beach where friends performed CPR. He died a short time later at a hospital. Zachary Poindexter and his brother Samuel were not injured.

(6,163 posts)Of course this was an accident but I can't imagine what his 26 year old son must be feeling.
Very sad.

(30,250 posts)Although, having lived in FL, too common. People don't treat boats and jet skis with the respect they deserve. They are not toys and can kill if not handled properly. I remember one incident when Emilio Estefan (Gloria's husband) killed a jet skier who got too close to his boat. He accidentally ran him over.
I feel sorry for the family, particularly the son who will have to live with the knowledge that he killed his dad.
