(1,975 posts)I just checked the area of where he was caught. It looks like it was just outside of the Naval Air Station there.

(115,677 posts)It is the site of a navy airbase, on north Whidbey Island, accessible on the north by bridge, the South by ferry.

(2,103 posts)OAK HARBOR, Wash. -- A man suspected of killing five people at Burlington's Cascade Mall on Friday night has been arrested in Oak Harbor after a 20-hour manhunt.
The Washington State Patrol identified the suspect as 20-year-old Arcan Cetin. Cetin emigrated from Turkey and is a legal U.S resident, according to an initial police investigation. Cetin graduated in 2015 from Oak Harbor High School.
During a Saturday night news conference, police said they were able to identify their suspect via tips and surveillance video showing the suspect's car. Surveillance video showed Cetin come into the store unarmed about 10 minutes before the shooting. Police believe he went back to the car to get the rifle.
Cetin's car was later spotted in Oak Harbor. Lt. Mike Hawley of the Island County Sheriffs Office said he was patrolling the neighborhood and spotted Cetin walking along the street.

(3,967 posts)Do you suppose the FBI will be able to determine a motive?
They also made a point to say it was not terrorism.
Like they did with the NYC bomb in Chelsea.
Which did turn out to be terrorism.
6chars
(3,967 posts)If this is terrorism (bear with me, it is possible), it might help Trump, as it gives the impression that the powers that be have a blind spot. The likelihood of Trump simultaneously increasing terrorism and reducing effectiveness of combatting it will be lost by many. His lines will not he hard to come up with.

oberliner
(58,724 posts)It's only when you include non-white women that it flips to HRC.
Here:
http://polling.reuters.com/#poll/TM651Y15_DS_13/filters/SC_RACE:1,SEX:2/dates/20160801-20160923/type/week
This poll gives Trump a six point lead with white women.
When you include all women, HRC leads by eleven.

(58,724 posts)That article, written by a guy who just graduated college last year, is complete nonsense.
HRC's most ardent supporters are black voters and they are much more likely to be religious and much less likely to have attended college that white voters.
This fact renders the conclusions of the article 100 percent wrong.
I'm wondering if this person has ever actually attended a church service (white, black, or otherwise).
If only white people voted, Trump would be president.
The only thing preventing Trump from winning the election is the African-American vote.
And that is the most religious demographic in the US.

(11,248 posts)The description was not meant to denigrate Hispanics, but to catch a suspect that there was very little info about.

(58,724 posts)And everything in between.
They could have just as easily said that he looked middle-eastern, which he could also pass as (and, in fact, was).

(11,248 posts)...Almost every kind of race imaginable. Lots of Muslims too of African and Arab descent attend a mosque next to me in the UES of Manhattan - not too many Turkish people though. Lots of Hispanics nearby too because Spanish Harlem is right next door...and my toddler son's Jiu-Jitsu class is mostly Hispanic.
Gun to the head - I would have guessed this killer was Hispanic from a quick glance alone.

(783 posts)Anybody in a mixed race family can tell you that the kids sometimes get called "Mexicans" (meaning of course Hispanic). People from India tell the same story of being mistaken for Latinos. In fact people with with that coloration can't catch a break -- In airports they're all (including dark Hispanics) at risk of being suspected as Middle Eastern potential terrorists. I knew a dark-complected Irish guy in Ireland who couldn't go through airports without being seen as a Middle Eastern "Arab" terrorist suspect. He did have kind of a crazy look in his eyes, to be fair, but he was a Protestant Christian religious fanatic preacher, not a faux-Moslem terrorist.
To be fair to law-enforcement and media people, they need short descriptive terms that are readily understood by their intended audience. They don't have a lot of time to spare during these pursuit events. Moreover, a lot of them aren't highly educated with extensive vocabularies. They need sound-byte headline-English words to use.
I don't know the demographics of the area in question, but if it has a lot of Arabs and few Hispanics, then it makes sense that someone might describe the suspect as an Arab, even though he isn't really. If the area has a lot of dark-complected Hispanics, then it makes sense to say "a Hispanic-looking guy".
Do I think the kid looks Hispanic? Not by a long shot. Not from looking at a posed photograph where details jump out. If you saw him from the back running away and all you saw was his dark hair, then yeah, you might say, "Oh, maybe that's the Hispanic guy they meant!", and the description would have done its job.
The choice of words surely wasn't intended as an accusation or slur against the Hispanic community.
If you saw a man dressed as a woman committing a crime, and you only got a very quick look, you might describe the suspect as a woman. That's not a slur against women. It's a natural mistake when you only get a quick look at somebody, maybe from a distance or at an odd angle. I wouldn't be so quick to take offense.
It would be nice to have a better word than "brown" to describe suntanned-looking people with dark hair. "Brunette" was a word once, but it sounds stilted and archaic now. "Dark" maybe, or middling-dark.

I wonder if there is a dual thing here, like he saw an attack at a Macy's and knew his ex gf worked at one and it clicked in him that this would really make an impact on her. Who the fuck knows what shit flowed through his mind.

Apparently someone tried to be all rational and non-dramatic earlier and it motivated someone to throw a bone to the theorists.

(322 posts)Ruling anything out so early especially when they didn't even know who did it is the height of irrationality, the large amount of misinformation that can spread like wildfire within 24 hrs of events like this seem commonplace.
jtuck004
(15,882 posts)But there is little utility in speculating as to motive when one hasn't gathered the evidence. And there is no better source to find that than the perp. So anyone who is actually accomplishing anything is trying to find and get that person or persons under control.
The rest of it is the stuff of people who want to use propaganda to scare people, people who fill the airwaves with ignorance and their time-wasting speculation, purview of people with internet degrees in criminology and other such high honors.
To give it any credence is irrational.
ymmv. bye.

(322 posts)"But there is little utility in speculating as to motive when one hasn't gathered the evidence."
And ruling something out early when one hasn't gathered the evidence is speculating...I'm really just advocating that it would be wise to have some moratorium on early knee jerk claims of all types. For example see the talk about how it was a boyfriend from some of the threads, now that the names and ages of victims have been released that theory seems to be debunked. But it was an excellent example of first 24 hr speculation.
