Donald Trump links Mexico border wall plan to Israel's 'successful' separation barrier
Source: The Guardian
Donald Trump attempted to draw parallels between Israels separation barrier and his much-touted border wall pledge on Sunday after both presidential nominees met the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
In Trumps hour-long meeting with Netanyahu at his Trump Tower penthouse, the two reportedly discussed at length Israels successful experience with a security fence that helped secure its borders, according to the Trump campaign.
Israels separation barrier, which runs for 440 miles (700km) near or along the 1949 armistice lines set after Israels war for independence, is a fence of most of its length. In contrast, Trump has pledged to build a wall of concrete and rebar as high as 55 feet (17 metres) along the nearly 2,000 mile border between the US and Mexico.
The meeting was the first of two that Netanyahu held with presidential candidates on Sunday, the day before the first presidential debate. Contrary to custom both meetings were closed to the media, the Trump campaign has prevented reporters from any access to his meeting with Netanyahu and aides to the Israeli prime minister reportedly went on to insist Clintons campaign abide by the same rules Trump insisted upon.

(3,580 posts)There's not any comparison. Bibi might be an asshole but he's not an idiot.

(1,060 posts)The big wall is so expensive they mostly use it were Palestinian settlements are close to Israeli settlements.
They don't use it with Gaza or to the south. That's why there are tons of tunnels even with a fully militarized border there.
Trump knows nothing about everything.
If you also consider the cost of militarization of the border and to maintain all these infrastructure, the long term cost would be astronomical.
And for what? 11M undocumented are still and those that overstay visas are still there.
Ah, but no fear, stop and frisk and a huge police force buildup + deportation that costs $100B of billions will "solve" all this.
If you count all the law and order expenses he's got lined up, the amount would be staggering, especially when he's also cutting taxes for mostly the top 1% at the same time. The budget shortfall would be extraordinary and would increase US borrowing costs and tank the US dollar.

(26,283 posts)a wall on the Mexican border simply cannot grasp the concept that the wall in Israel is a postage stamp size compared to the aircraft carrier size wall that would have to be built and maintained along the Mexican border.

Bibi is an asshole. I will never forgive him for participating in the Congressional Republicans' stunt disrespecting Obama.

(26,403 posts)He just called all Mexicans terrorists... Agree or disagree about what the wall represents, the stated reason Israel built it was for security from Palestinian suicide attacks.

Meanwhile their ratings darling Drumpf, still keeps them off his plane and out of his motorcade... and not a peep out of the fawning bloviators. They just say "Ok" and whine about Clinton.

(9,350 posts)That was just stupid. When has the Israeli separation barrier been a success? Hamas fighters are constantly launching successful attacks at Israel, which usually leads to military actions by Israel against Hamas. In addition, the separation barrier is just 440 miles long while the U.S.-Mexico border is about 2,000 miles long. Furthermore, there are a number of legal issues (private property, treaties, and Native American land) that will have to be dealt with before a wall can be build on the U.S.-Mexico border.
