Chicago Tribune endorses Gary Johnson
Source: Politico
The Chicago Tribune on Friday endorsed Libertarian Gary Johnson for president, joining a handful of other newspapers around the country that have rejected both the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees.
We would rather recommend a principled candidate for president regardless of his or her prospects for victory than suggest that voters cast ballots for such disappointing major-party candidates, the editorial board wrote.
We reject the cliche that a citizen who chooses a principled third-party candidate is squandering his or her vote, the endorsement continued.
We offer this endorsement to encourage voters who want to feel comfortable with their choice. Who want to vote for someone they can admire.
The Tribune has traditionally endorsed Republicans in the past, although in 2008 and in 2012 it endorsed Chicago's own Barack Obama. In May, the Chicago paper endorsed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in the Republican primary, and declined to endorse either Democratic candidate. In March, it wrote that it would not endorse Trump under any circumstances.

(15,951 posts)doesn't seem to have the intellect to be president. They really think that Johnson would be a better president than Clinton.

(31,804 posts)But not since then. They have endorsed many Democrats at the state and local level in Illinois and Chicago. They endorsed Obama in 08 and 12.

(91,962 posts)It is no surprise they have endorsed Johnson, because of the libertarian bullshit
"In a 2007 statement of principles published in the Tribune's print and online editions, the paper's editorial board described the newspaper's philosophy, from which is excerpted the following:
The Chicago Tribune believes in the traditional principles of limited government; maximum individual responsibility; minimum restriction of personal liberty, opportunity and enterprise. It believes in free markets, free will and freedom of expression. These principles, while traditionally conservative, are guidelines and not reflexive dogmas.
The Tribune brings a Midwestern sensibility to public debate. It is suspicious of untested ideas.
The Tribune places great emphasis on the integrity of government and the private institutions that play a significant role in society. The newspaper does this in the belief that the people cannot consent to be governed unless they have knowledge of, and faith in, the leaders and operations of government. The Tribune embraces the diversity of people and perspectives in its community. It is dedicated to the future of the Chicago region.
The Tribune has remained economically conservative, being widely skeptical of increasing the minimum wage and entitlement spending. Although the Tribune criticized the Bush administration's record on civil liberties, the environment, and many aspects of its foreign policy, it continued to support his presidency while taking Democrats, such as Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and Cook County Board President Todd Stroger, to task and calling for their removal from office."

(601 posts)That is just stupid, AND THEY KNOW IT. Johnson is utterly unqualified and not even close to smart enough. He couldn't even name one single foreign head of state when asked. The Trib should be ashamed of themselves, how ridiculous and irresponsible.

(35,812 posts)I can confidently claim the Republican-backing Chicago Tribune doesn't fool Chicagoans.
We've known for decades how they hide behind journalism to promote their owners' world, where there are no principles that ethicists know journalists follow.
Johnson is a tool left over from a lost bid in 2012.
What the Trib couldn't say:
"Given the choice between a moron and totally unqualified raging lunatic, or the most highly qualified candidate ever to seek the office -- but, damn it all, a WOMAN -- we have no choice but to endorse another possibly even worse moron."
Team Koch and owner allies use their newspapers in their war of attrition to turn blue states like Illinois to purple to red. Buying the governorship was their last major move.
After all, there are still a lot of landbase resources and depressed workers to exploit in the Midwest, using ALEC and libertarian candidates as their tools between elections.

(11,435 posts)Given the Johnson's party doesn't believe in addressing climate change, the influence of money in politics, such a thing as a minimum wage, public schools..., the Chicago Tribune's endorsement of him appears to be some sort of getback. It makes no logical sense at all.
