A student is no longer enrolled at a Tennessee university after attending a Black Lives Matter protest on campus wearing a gorilla mask and handing out bananas, a university official said on Friday.
The student, identified by the Eastern Tennessee State University (ETSU) Police Department as Tristan Rettke, was arrested on Wednesday on the ETSU campus in Johnson City, Tennessee and charged with civil rights intimidation.
He is no longer enrolled at ETSU, Joe Smith, a spokesman for the university said on Friday.
It is unclear if Rettke was dismissed from the university or withdrew voluntarily. Smith said that Rettke was a freshman at the university and had been put on interim suspension immediately following the incident, but declined to comment further citing privacy issues.

(135,425 posts)Students at the event alerted officials and cited a disorderly conduct report. Rettke was then taken to the public safety office, where he gave a statement to officers. After a discussion between campus public safety supervisors, campus administrators, and the District Attorney General, Rettke was charged with civil rights intimidation.
While detained, Rettke told officers that he heard about the protest from the social media platform Yik Yak. He then stated that on Tuesday he went to a store and bought the overalls, mask, bananas, and rope. Rettke admitted that he attended the event in attempt to provoke the protesters."
ETSU President Brian Noland held a press conference to address the campus regarding the disturbance. When Rettke interrupted the protest, one student streamed the event on Facebook live. Noland saw Rettkes disruption in real time.

Of what crime has this person been convicted? I know he has been charged with some civil rights offense, but I do not see that he has been convicted of anything. Does he not enjoy the protection of due process, or is that quaint notion only for people who have thoughts and engage in acts with which we agree?
If mom and dad pulled the plug, then due process is a moot point.
