Two American advisers killed, three wounded by shooter in Afghan capital

A gunman in an Afghan army uniform on Wednesday shot dead at least two American advisers and wounded three more near a base in the Afghan capital before being killed himself, officials said.
The American deaths included one soldier and one civilian, while one soldier and two civilians were injured and in stable condition, the U.S. military command in Kabul said in a statement.
"The two individuals were killed during an attack near a coalition base by an unknown assailant, who was later killed," the statement said. "They were conducting duties as part of the larger NATO mission to train, advise, and assist the Afghan security services."
About 13,000 international troops and thousands of additional civilian contractors remain in Afghanistan to train and assist government forces battling Taliban insurgents hoping to reimpose a fundamentalist Islamic regime 15 years after they lost power in a U.S.-led military operation.

A U.S. soldier from Illinois and an Army civilian employee from Oklahoma have been identified as those killed in an attack this week in Afghanistan's capital of Kabul, the Defense Department said.
Army Sgt. Douglas J. Riney, 26, of Fairview, Illinois, and Michael G. Sauro, 40, of McAlester, Oklahoma, died Thursday in Kabul of wounds received from encountering hostile enemy forces, the military said in a statement.
NATO and an Afghan official earlier said a man wearing an Afghan army uniform had killed a U.S. service member and an American civilian Wednesday in Kabul. NATO said another U.S. service member and two U.S. civilians were wounded in the attack. The Associated Press sent emails Friday to military officials seeking to confirm whether Riney and Sauro were the ones who died in that attack.

(6,147 posts)that the Trump campaign isn't jumping on this and saying that Obama can't keep Americans safe. They are off their game.
I have been waiting for some catastrophic national military emergency or terrorist attack to happen, and it still could happen, that the Republicans can use to say that Democrats are soft on protecting Americans abroad, and shouldn't be elected.
Heck, this has been scaring me for weeks. Eighteen more days...
