PHILIPPINES President Rodrigo Duterte lashed out anew at the United States today and said it could forget a bilateral defence deal if he stayed in power long enough, in the latest jarring statement from Manila about the future of the alliance.
US should not treat us 'like a dog on a leash' Philippines President in fresh attack
The fresh broadside from President Duterte came as he was about to board a plane for an official visit to fellow U.S. ally Japan, a big investor in the Philippines that is becoming nervous about its apparent pivot towards rival power China.
The volatile, crime-busting President Duterte had on the eve of the visit softened his remarks last week about a "separation" from Washington, telling Japanese media he wasn't planning to change alliances and was only seeking to build trade and commerce with China.
But he pulled no punches today when he said he hated having foreign troops in the Philippines and told the United States not to treat his country "like a dog with a leash".
Commenting on a visit to Manila yesterday by Daniel Russel, an Assistant Secretary of State, President Duterte said Washington should forget about an Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the Philippines if he were to stay in charge longer.

(2,979 posts)It looks like they're taking it way too goddamn serious and way too damn far.
They elected this crazy asshole to do exactly what he's doing.
On that same NPR program Duterte was quoted as saying that "as mayor, he should have been first in line", referring to the rape and murder of an Australian Missionary.

(6,241 posts)And this joker is offering change. Drugs are an extreme problem over there, and this guy is offering an extreme solution. People see their friends and family die of drug addiction and they want something to be done about it, and the previous administration was offering more of the same as a solution.

(13,069 posts)MANILA, Philippines US military assistance to the Philippines is expected to increase to $66 million this year. However, it is not tied to the implementation of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, US embassy Press Attaché Kurt Hoyer clarified yesterday.
That is an increase from the original expectation of $40 million, he said.
During a visit to Manila in January last year for the Fifth Philippines-US Bilateral Strategic Dialogue, US Assistant Secretary for Defense David Shear said the US was giving the Philippines $40 million for 2015 in military assistance.

(525 posts)The Philippines is re-opening normal economic ties with China after Chinese sanctions related to the Philippines being aggressive in prosecuting the Spratley dispute in international courts. But they're going the same ways as Australia & other powers in the region. Economic ties with China, but security ties with the U.S.

(24,329 posts)This whole let's be concerned about countries siding with China is getting old
I heard this mantra about Al Sisi in Egypt and Saudi Arabia
If we pull aid KSA has said they'll pick up the slack
KSA has it's own troubles and has tired of Al Sisi's inability to stabilize the country
At some point you call these people's threats and let the chips fall
Can't be friends with every country in the region
