Meryl Streep slams Trump in emotional awards speech

Source: The Hill

Actress Meryl Streep delivered an emotional speech railing against President-elect Donald Trump -- though never mentioning him by name -- during her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 74th annual Golden Globes on Sunday.

The iconic actress referred to the time Trump imitated a disabled New York Times reporter on the campaign trail, and said that particular, real-life performance broke her heart.

“But there was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good — there was nothing good about it — but it was effective and did its job," Streep said of Trump's imitation of reporter Serge Kovaleski, who has a congenital condition affecting the joints. "It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth.”

“It was that moment, when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter -- someone he out-ranked in privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back," she continued." It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie; it was in real life.”

“This instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform — by someone powerful — it filters down into everybody’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully to lose others, we all lose,” Streep said.

"...it filters down into everybody’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing...."

Just like when a supervisor insults his or her subordinates; it's tacit approval for bullying and intimidation down through the ranks of the employees. As we all know, nothing ever good comes from this.

This is one of the reasons we needed ONE senator to object to certifying the vote this week. To stand up against this atrocity taking place. WE THE PEOPLE need our leaders to bring us hope by speaking truth and taking actions like Meryl did tonight.

@realDonaldTrump: Meryl Streep, one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes...

@realDonaldTrump: She is a Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never "mocked" a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him...

@realDonaldTrump: "groveling" when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!

Our neighbor and gas station owner down the road told my husband, when he stopped in for gas a few weeks ago, that all of the tapes showing tRump being a racist, sexist, bigoted jerk aren't real. They've been made up by the left wing media to make tRump look bad.

They don't care about facts or reality. tRump knows this and takes advantage of it like the good huckster he is.

It's been debunked! It's a liberal lie! Never happened!

Seriously - look at People Magazine's coverage of this (not a magazine I regularly follow), and you'll see what I mean.

A point often missed is that Ms Streep never said that Trump *mocked* the reporter. She said he imitated him. Which he visibly did, whether one wants to pretend it wasn't mocking or not.

all those shows where humiliation is the reason for the show's existence. I don't watch much TV but when I realized that even the effin cooking show was based on the chef humiliating and firing prep cooks, I realized what an immoral lesson these shows teach. All the talent shows, like Trump's, do the same thing.

Do you actually need examples of how Hollywood movies celebrate things like might-makes-right, violence is the answer and torture?

Years and years of this, that's my "allegation."

We need more prominent people speaking the truth. Each time something like this happens, it delegitimizes the a**hole she's talking about. It gives one more person the courage to speak the truth.

This was an amazing speech and I especially like how she called out the press. Always loved Meryl Streep but now I love her even more.

About any speeches from Hollywood, or satire pieces on this election.

Words aren't working anymore. We have to get back to the business of making change at a local level.

Work on getting progressives into local offices and getting money out politics at the state level.
That will make a difference going forward.

The words? I appreciate the sentiment, but were getting our lands ruined, healthcare taken away, and equal rights being endangered at every level of government.
