Beijing Says One China Policy Isnt Negotiable

BEIJINGChinas foreign ministry issued a thinly veiled rebuke of Donald Trump, following a statement by the U.S. president-elect that the One China policywhich has underpinned bilateral ties for almost four decadeswas negotiable.
Mr. Trump told The Wall Street Journal in a Friday interview that the longstanding policy, under which the U.S. agrees not to recognize Taiwan diplomatically, was up in the air. Mr. Trump said he wouldnt commit to the policy unless he saw progress from Beijing on issues such as trade practices and currency. Everything is under negotiation, including one China, he said.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the policy was the foundation of U.S.-China ties and was nonnegotiable.
There is but one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, Mr. Lu said in a statement that was posted on the foreign ministrys website on Saturday. In order to avoid disruption to the sound and steady development of the China-U.S. relations and bilateral cooperation in key areas, we urge relevant parties in the U.S. to fully recognize the high sensitivity of the Taiwan question, approach Taiwan-related issues with prudence and honor the commitment made by all previous U.S. administrations, the statement said.

(5,857 posts)on our China policy for the last 30 years... I wish Obama had changed it because I don't trust Trump, but still, we've let China:
1) Impose a "ONE" China policy, while we are military allies with Taiwan.
2) Manipulate currency to make themselves more competitive.
3) Manipulate corporate structures to keep US products out, and require US companies to give trade secrets and expertise to China if we want to access their markets.
4) Allow a buildup in the South China Sea, in violation of international law.
We've basically been screwed by China for decades, I have no problem telling them where to go.
