Ex-president George H.W. Bush moved to intensive care; wife hospitalized

Source: Reuters

18 JAN 2017 AT 13:47 ET

Former U.S. president George H.W. Bush has been moved to an intensive-care unit at a Houston hospital with pneumonia and was stable and resting comfortably after doctors performed a procedure to clear his airway, his office said on Wednesday.

His wife, former first lady Barbara Bush, also was admitted to the same hospital on Wednesday as a precaution after experiencing fatigue and coughing, the office said in a statement.

Bush, who at 92 is the nation’s oldest living ex-president, has been at Houston Methodist Hospital since Saturday after experiencing shortness of breath, family spokesman Jim McGrath said on Wednesday.

Since then, Bush experienced an “acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia” and was sedated for the unspecified procedure, his office said.

Don't know if this was a chest tube, suction or trach. Either way, it is a procedure done to prolong life. I am a bit surprised. My parents had advanced directives and probably would have opted out of treatment.

She had COPD and pneumonia. Her oxygen level got below 50% so they were going to put in a tube but had to suction her before they could get air to her lungs.

The family put her into hospice last Wednesday and she passed away the next day.

With her COPD she could have suffered much longer. She's been fighting for each breath for years and especially in the last year. Until this last illness she had been able to function.

But we're glad she isn't hurting any more.

She was amazing - started the Bay County Audubon group, was a Girl Scout leader, volunteered with United Way, published a genealogy book, and raised five amazing children. She had eight grandchildren and eight great grandsons!

The Family. Barbara came off as vicious and nasty, mean spirited and rude.

He, on the other hand, is responsible for the Americans with Disabilities Act, an immensely important law.

My dad had "pneumonia" because he had had a slight heart attack at home and didn't go in until he was short of breath. Congestive heart failure makes you short of breath when the heart can't keep the lungs clear.

He had the good sense to put on the brakes in Iraq and, even though he gave Lee Atwater free reign in 1988, he actively campaigned against David Duke in 1991, calling him a racist and a charlatan. He loved and served his country. I respect him and wish him peace.

I'm an Advanced Life Support EMT. George Bush the Elder is in ICU on a ventilator with pneumonia. He's 94. This is not good. They'll probably pull him through but the end is near. He's in severe respiratory distress, which puts huge strain on the heart. There are three stages, each worse than the preceding one: Respiratory difficulty; respiratory distress; respiratory arrest. I suspect he's between distress and arrest -- he's moving very little oxygen -- the heart and brain require lots of oxygen -- no doubt they are throwing everything they have at him and his case is not unusual for his age, with pneumonia. I wish him the best, but, let's be realistic.

I'm a liberal Democrat but I certainly admire the old-style Republicans like GHWBush. He was a New England Brahman with a sense of noblesse oblige and civic duty . . . Navy fighter pilot in WW II.

If he were to die in the next couple of days, his passing would suck all the air out of Trump's inauguration and would cause comparisons between a true statesman and the Carnival Barker. Not that I want that to happen . . .

But I don't wish him or Barbara any ill will. If it's his time, I hope it's quick and painless, and his family is with him. And if "his time" just happens to screw up Trump's thunder, fine with me.
