Trump's hiring freeze already hurting some of his most loyal supporters: Veterans

WASHINGTON President Donald Trump's temporary hiring freeze on federal jobs is disproportionately affecting a group of his most loyal supporters: veterans, who receive preference in federal hiring. Some already have had job interviews canceled or postponed, advocacy groups say.
The hiring freeze also applies to the Department of Veterans Affairs, something that deeply troubles veterans groups and lawmakers, who say the freeze complicates the provision of veterans services by an agency that is chronically understaffed.
"Our nation's veterans should not be made to sacrifice any more than they already have while you review federal hiring," a group of Democratic lawmakers, led by Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., and Rep. Tim Walz, D-Minn., wrote in a letter to Trump, urging him to exempt veterans from the freeze, that had 53 signatures as of Thursday morning.
"This freeze raises serious concerns about the president's commitment to veterans and improving the VA," said Paul Rieckhoff, an Iraq War veteran who is the head of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. "Over the past day, countless IAVA members have contacted us concerned about the future of their health care. Job seekers waiting to hear about a hiring determination just had their hope dashed."

(49,043 posts)Service to the country is meritorious, but voting for Trump as a cross-over or waivering supporter without being a full-on deplorable kind of cancels it out to zero.
tRump's instability, lack of education, narcissism, and confirmation-bias were on full display in the primary and the general election campaign.
Full-on deplorable tRump supporters nullified their service in lots of ways long ago, for example with deplorable racism and sexism and anti-environmentalism.
Some vet supporters of tRump are good people who got deluded or conned and their service still stands as meritorious.

(1,803 posts)I said exactly the same thing: Too fucking bad. That's what you get when you vote against your own interests. I figured someone here would object to me bashing veterans who served our country. Veteran or not, there is no fixing stupid and there is no justification for supporting a mentally ill fascist demagogue for President.
We are all marks to the GOPTRUMP monster.

(470 posts)whose career I have followed since the late seventies when he first came to my attention. Trump doesn't care about anyone or anybody or anything (least of all your jobs or the country) except himself. He never has and he never will.
THE ONLY THING TRUMP WANTS IS REVENGE ON EVERYBODY.
One of the biggest problems -- when you tell his supporters what a sack of shit trump is, their response is "THAT'S WHY WE LIKE HIM."
So this is what the rest of us have to deal with. Besides the neo-fascist Bannon/Miller wing of the tea party, using the malevolent adolescent figurehead of trump to destroy the United States of America. This is their stated goal.
Wake up.

(5,857 posts)June 30 / July 1 is the day that medical students become residents and residents become attending physicians. That means they are interviewing for those jobs now.
If the VA can't interview, then they could lose out on an entire years worth of residents and attending physicians, which could be really, really hard to replace.
Match day is Mar 17, so...
