Trump consier executive order - deporting immigrants if dependent on government assistance.

Source: Apnews

7:40 p.m.

President Donald Trump is considering an executive order that would target some immigrants for deportation if they become dependent on government assistance.

The Associated Press has obtained a copy of the draft order that calls for the identification and removal "as expeditiously as possible" of any legal immigrant who relies on certain kinds of public welfare benefits.

The order, if signed, would also focus the government's efforts on blocking immigrants who are likely to become reliant on government benefits.

The White House did not immediately comment.

Immigrants already must prove financial independence before they are allowed into the United States. The draft order signals the administration is considering not only cracking down on immigrants in the U.S. illegally, but also some living in country legally.

They're expendable and they aren't connected, don't you know. Sure they're suffering, but it's for the greater good, eh?

It sounds heartless and harsh, but that's who they are.

Remember all of those forgotten souls who voted for Trumpy? He'll take care of them. He said so. They aren't forgotten. Nope, they aren't.

The Repubs have already announced their intentions to cut food stamp rolls and make it harder to qualify. This would cause any legal residents who are not yet citizens to drop off rolls before the crackdown happens, just so they don't risk deportation

Once again, very mean spirited. Trump has been lying and brainwashing his followers to think that illegals are getting lots of free government assistance, so won't be hard to convince them it's okay to deport legal immigrants too if they get help.

we have homeless people who were born here who die out in the cold, no legal place to even relieve themselves, much less get clean, eat, or safely sleep. We have LAWS AGAINST FEEDING OUR OWN PEOPLE, how come you people all think we can take care of the whole planet?

We have laws against giving them coats or clothing without a permit.

Can Americans freely bombard another country, ANY other country, with no passport or visa, and demand not only to be fed, but to be housed as well?

I agree, or know, that OUR country has bombed the hell out of these countries who now have genuine refugees who need help BECAUSE OF OUR DOING. Still, bringing them all here with open welcome arms while our OWN needy LEGAL CITIZENS are falling down slowly dying while we complain that we can see them sleeping in our property owner's doorways and must CRIMINALIZE their existence to solve the problem while we treat them like contageous pariahs this is what I see in MY OWN community what about yours I'm just mad at the double standard that you promote here.

That you agree with deporting legal immigrants who receive benefits? Do you believe that somehow a legal immigrant's food stamps is the reason we have continued homelessness?

Otherwise, what exactly does your rant (talk about double standards, btw) have to do with this OP?

Though having other working people here might give us more money to do it. But we'd have to legislatively undo the Reagan Era actions that led to it. For that we need Democrats in Congress and the White House and Democratic governors and state houses.

You absolutely setup a false dichotomy that is part of the problem.

We can do both if the rich pay their share in this country. Full stop!

Tue Jan 31, 2017, 05:52 PM

We can do both, and have done both. The problem is the will and the sheer nastiness of the political sphere and the simple fact that Right Wing media has painted charity and mercy as a weakness. There's money, and an increasing number of communities have found that it costs far less to invest in housing and support for the homeless, the addicted, and the mentally compromised than it does to incarcerate and criminalize poverty.

I live in a border town in a temperate zone; the city just finished a month long survey and count that revealed approximately 15000 homeless out of the ~ 2 million that live and work here, so they've made the decision to directing their efforts away from criminalization to long-term and permanent housing linked to outreach and health services; when they ran the numbers out five years, they found they could project a savings of close to 30% from what they're spending now on health and policing of the homeless, as well as the public health and safety costs. The local school district recognizes homeless and "alternatively housed" (couch surfing) students, and makes an effort to connect those students and their families/supporters with services. All with state and county/local money - very little funding for any of these programs come from the Feds.

Before, homeless students or students without a regular address were penalized - kicked out of the district - for not having a permanent address or living situation, thanks to an ingrained GOP "Tough Love/punish the troublemakers" philosophy.

Taking care of "Our Own" at this point in time is pretty much a local psychological barrier component, not an economic barrier. There is no double standard here except from the Right Wing and the Prosperity Worshippers.

BTW, while the homeless population has grown, the growth is not as great as people want to pretend it is - what has happened is that homelessness in the US is now openly visible, when before it was just swept under the rug or into jails.
Undocumented immigration is at an all time low; counting the burden on service requirements from both the uptick in homelessness and any refugee population seeking asylum here barely comes to a half the burden erased from the decrease in undocumented immigration who have also sought and received services over the past decade and a half.

So this canard of "we can't feed/house/take care of our OWN", so why should we care about anyone else is strictly political - and pretty much local and state politics.
