Georgia Dems Want Sally Yates for Governor
Source: The Daily Beast
Democrats in Georgia are openly pushing Sally Q. Yates, who briefly served as acting attorney general during the onset of the Trump administration, to run for governor in 2018, Politico reported on Friday. Yates made a name for herself recently when she refused to enforce President Trumps travel ban and was subsequently fired. I dont think you can think of any possible candidates in Georgia and not mention Sally Yates name right now, said Tharon Johnson, a former adviser to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. Shes a symbol of hope and resistance when it comes to standing up to Donald Trump. State Sen. Elena Parent called Yates a hometown hero and a symbol of the anti-Trump resistance sweeping this country. Yates is a former U.S. attorney in Atlanta.

(59,585 posts)Or Georgia Democrats could select a nice bland, focus-tested, gun-totin' Republican-Lite individual with testes and white skin and facial hair, and Rufus and Bubba would . . . . oh, that's right, they'd vote for the Republican.

(10,500 posts)come within 1 point, even assuming the race had narrowed somewhat to a 6 point national win.
Had the race not narrowed then she would have won by 1 point, assuming an 8 point national win.
I think that with a local candidate we can do even better. I believe that Georgia is a state that we can put in play.
Our candidates for governor and senate were looking pretty strong in 2014 until the GOP persuaded people that Obama was going to let us all catch the ebola virus.

(259 posts)She was always going to lose by 5 points (which is still really good) in Georgia.

(10,500 posts)I understand why you have made the assessment that you are asserting and I realize that it is well thought out.
But there is a growing Hispanic and Asian population in Georgia and the Carolinas and that bodes well for the Democrats.
I honestly believe that we can win Georgia in 2020 and that we can win the governor's election in 2018.
Also, I believe that Comey's intervention cost Clinton 4 points nationally (6 points in states like MI, WI and PA). And that is assuming that the race was the still going to narrow somewhat even without the FBI intervention.

(259 posts)I agree that Democrats have a good shot in 2018 and 2020, but only because of Trump. The demographics are better but they are not quite there yet.
And, I don't think any Democrat candidate (definitely not Hillary) had any chance of getting within 5 points in 2016.
StevieM
(10,500 posts)But HRC did get a loss limited to 5 points. So I figure Comey must have cost her some votes.
But if it is true that he cost her almost nothing in Georgia than that proves just how many votes he cost her in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina (where he did not lead in a single poll), Florida and Arizona.
Anyway, it seems reasonable that 1 percent of the electorate shifted as a result of the FBI intervention and Comey's lies. That is a 2 point shift.

(259 posts)Comey may have had an impact, maybe not. No one will ever know for sure.

(10,500 posts)He labeled one of the candidates a criminal suspect who was under FBI investigation. That is as big as it gets. Her numbers tumbled when she fell down on 9-11. She was labeled a liar for that non-event. The Comey intervention made that pale by comparison.

(33,518 posts)The reason why our country is run by a minority party composed of small minded bigots is that this group has successfully gerrymandered their way into power.
That needs to change, big time.

A younger, smart, anti-Trump candidate is exactly what the Democrats need at this time.
