Nine people flee US border patrol to seek asylum in Canada

Nine asylum-seekers, including four children, barely made it across the Canadian border on Friday as a U.S. border patrol officer tried to stop them and a Reuters photographer captured the scene.
As a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer seized their passports and questioned a man in the front passenger seat of a taxi that had pulled up to the border in Champlain, New York, four adults and four young children fled the cab and ran to Royal Canadian Mounted Police on the other side.
One by one they scrambled across the snowy gully separating the two countries. RCMP officers watching from the other side helped them up, lifting the younger children and asking a woman, who leaned on her fellow passenger as she walked, if she needed medical care.
The children looked back from where they had come as the U.S. officer held the first man, saying his papers needed to be verified.

(531 posts)this was such a close call, what a read. They had one man detained so he threw all their belongings across the border. Then he grabbed their passports and made a break for it. And made it across. I can't believe this is my country they are fleeing from like this. They'd been here two years, good for them for getting out and not waiting for the knock on the door. God bless them, I hope Canada treats them well. What a shitshow Trump has turned the US into .

Whatever actually happened, that same officer then carried the rest of their belongings, including a stroller, to the border so the family would have them in Canada. Not a villain.

(58,785 posts)Trumpie's a fraction of a man who wants to be loved and admired and to feel powerful by screwing over others, but ultimately it's all about him. Best I can tell from reading about personality disorders, he simply can't care about others, and I'm not sure he's capable of comprehending, much less caring about, the costs to others. Empty holes where empathy and compassion are in normal people.

(531 posts)they are completely unprepared for this kind of weather and not adequately dressed
"On Christmas Eve, two Ghanaians were picked up on the roadside north of town, some 10 hours after they had set off into a field near the border, sinking to their waists in snow. The temperature that morning was reported to be below zero, with windchill making it even worse. The mens hands were so badly frostbitten that they lost almost all their fingers."

However, if you are educated and highly-skilled, Canada may be interested in allowing you to immigrate. If you are an illiterate farm worker, good luck.

(12,388 posts)weren't being overly aggressive. If they had been trumpy assholes, they would have shot the man and maybe the whole family. In the end, one of the American officers took their belongings over to the border where they were retrieved by the Canadian patrol.
Good to know that at least in this case, their hearts weren't in it. But of course once they are threatened with their jobs, things will change.

Would he prefer to deport them to Sudan because they don't deserve freedom in a western country? Either way, they wouldn't be in the US.

(3,320 posts)the flood is coming. if the 45 admin or this congress does any more to gerrymander or suppress votes the outcome of which is to set up some kind of 1000 year Rep. reich. We are out. With climate change Canada would seem to be a better choice than warmer climes. That said I have not looked into it much.....yet.
The idea that this makes any of our people weep because they forsee where this may be heading, just pisses me off more so still with the fighting at this point for me/us. (he says passport in hand)
