A Trump Ally in Congress Warns His State, California, to Make Nice

Source: NY Times

WASHINGTON Representative Kevin McCarthy, the majority leader, keeps a souvenir from a dinner the night before this years inauguration behind his desk: an embossed menu autographed by Donald J. Trump. The president-elect was at his table. Mr. McCarthy is not only the second-most powerful Republican in the House he is also one of the earliest and most earnest supporters of the new president.

But this weekend, Mr. McCarthy one of Mr. Trumps closest allies on Capitol Hill returns home to his district in Bakersfield, Calif., a state that embodies the organized Democratic resistance to Mr. Trumps presidency.

By now, Mr. McCarthy said, he is getting used to the protesters who have turned up outside his home and district office since Election Day, the newspaper editorials demanding that he protect his state from Mr. Trumps policies and the state legislative hearings with testimony about the number of his constituents in danger of losing health coverage.

* * *
And in an interview here, Mr. McCarthy left no doubt that his loyalties in this fight were east of the Mississippi River. He assailed Californias Democratic leaders for provoking the president, and warned that it could prove damaging to the state, particularly as the Trump administration created an infrastructure program to pay for public works projects across the nation.

A California Congressional representative siding with Trump, rather than his State or his constituents. Trump's crack down on immigrants is going to hurt many central valley farms that depend on such labor.

It will be the Chris Christie method. Use public money to reward those who voted for you, and sway those who might vote for you. California doesn't qualify on either count.

..so will Fresno, Salinas, Watsonville, Ventura and many other agriculturally economically dependent counties in our state. The repercussions from the corporate farming interests and their coming increased cost of labor, loss of profits and hopefully, increased exposure of their hypocrisy when the nations salad bowl can't offer the cheap produce that we have now. My familiy, my parents and theirs since the depression, working history is in the fields of Salinas, Watsonville and rooted in Bakersfield when they weren't chasing crop harvests. There they picked cotton to survive. Bakersfield is, arguably, one of the most red areas of this state. If Bakersfield turns and that trend of loosing cheap farm labor hits other red states the push back from the corporate farm conglomerations and their lobbyists will be...ironic at the least.

McCarthy has won election to the House with at least 70% of the vote in multiple elections, but his lowest margin seems to have been in the most recent election.

On the other hand, the demographics of Bakersfield is 45% Latino. Perhaps this accounts for his lower than average margin of victory in 2016, as part of the anti-Trump sentiment in many Latino communities. Also the district is huge, geographically, ranging from the lower tip of the Sierra Nevada mountains to North Los Angeles county. Presumably the mostly rural population is heavily conservative.

But it doesn't mean an effort to reach out to votes in this district couldn't be made, as well as showing up at any public meeting McCarthy dares to hold in his home district.

In measures such as ozone and particulates. Causes may include its position inside a bowl of sorts at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, as well as nearby large fossil fuel extraction and refining industries.

I will refrain from speculating how the resultant lack of clean air might affect political judgment.

McCarthy represents California's 23rd district. According to what I found on Daily Kos, that district went for Trump by 58.1 percent, with Hillary only getting 36.1 percent, a fairly substantial gap. Is McCarthy representing California as a whole? Clearly not. Is he representing his district? In this instance, a case can be made for that.

Don't get me wrong, McCarthy and Trump need to be opposed in every possible way, but to assert that McCarthy is going against the will of his district, I don't see that.

This is how they operate.

They provoke a state by attacking its values (refugees, immigrants) and threatening to take Federal money away (despite California being a net giver state). Then they wait for the reaction. When they get the reaction they start a false narrative claiming that the state is "provoking" the Mango Mussolini.

Don't buy it. Slap McCarthy's invented fiction down.

Truth: The Minority President attacked California first. tRump did the provoking. It's on the record and can be verified.

I am from, I am embarrassed to say, his district. He is a fool but he keeps getting elected. Our local paper, The Bakersfield California, has published a whole page of "Dear Kevin" letters to the editor several times now about what he needs to tell Washington. At least 90% are anti his positions. There are repeated sit-ins and protests but he just doesn't care. We have a high number of Hispanics and we are the home of the Cesar Chavez family but we (I) are/am not represented. I keep getting "canned" responses to my emails.
We are highly agricultural here and have a heavy influence from oil companies (wells) and many of these interests are heavily Republican. My hope is that the agricultural interests will begin to see this recent immigration deportation as a problem. Kevin is heavily invested in power now so it will take a serious shake up (and a strong candidate) to defeat him. We (Democrats) are here but we certainly are not represented.
We will keep battering at their walls.

If not, I suggest you get in touch with them, get on their mailing list and tell them of the situation in California's US CD-23.

Also, if you have not done so already, join up with your local Democratic club or committee and get them on board with this.

Chances are, together, you can come up with a strong challenger to McCarthy come 2018.

Born and raised in coastal Ventura, they moved to Bakersfield as young professionals and bought a brand new house for a really good price, and had a couple of kids.

Here's what this mild-mannered couple "discovered" about themselves in Bakersfield: she's Jewish; and he's no longer a hereditary Republican. I mean, of course she's Jewish, she just never gave it much thought until she was surrounded by fundamentalist Christians who wanted to proselytize her in the worst way. And of course he knew he was not as conservative as his parents, but suddenly he was surrounded by the far right wing on all sides and knew he was not one of them.

When Obama won, the only co-worker my niece could talk with was a Muslim woman, because everyone else at the work site was in sackcloth and ashes.

They no longer live in Bakersfield.

But when people tell you that California is "solidly blue" -- think of Bakersfield. And Orange County. And a whole lot of the inland (non-coastal) region.
