Rand Paul: Trump's Just 'Expressing His Opinion,' I'm Not Seeing Any Efforts to 'Limit the Press'

Senator Rand Paul reacted to President Trumps tweet about the press being the enemy today by saying hes not too concerned so long as theres no legislation in the works to limit the press.
ABCs Jon Karl asked him if he has concerns about the tweet. Paul said its certainly not something he would have said, but he does agree that theres serious media bias issues out there.
Karl brought up John McCain saying yesterday that attacking and cracking down on the press is how dictatorships start.
Paul took some shots at McCain on foreign policy before saying, I havent seen any legislation coming forward that wants to limit the press. I see President Trump expressing his opinion, rather forceful in his own distinct way, but I see no evidence that anybody is putting forward any kind of legislation to limit the press.

(9,993 posts)Seriously what is Trump going to do to them? Send in the National Guard to shut 'em down? Yeah, right.
Because if they were REALLY Trump's enemy, they'd be going after him relentlessly on his corruption, on Russia, on how he's going to screw/let Republicans screw schools, teachers, government employees, ACA, Medicare, and SS recipients, the environment... etc., etc., etc.! But no, they're endlessly whining about Trump not liking THEM -- after all they did to enable him, too! -- when all these other issues need front and center attention!

He wants us to wait until it's too late to do anything.
Watch the FCC and net neutrality.

However, it is really only the orders we should worry about. Indeed, it is only the orders we can do anything about.

(27,442 posts)Maybe no one has proposed a bill to curtail the freedom of the press but that doesn't mean we should jyst sit down and not call Trump out for his lunatic opinion.
He's the President and his opinions matter and get massive coverage. If they are bullshit then it's not just our right but our obligation to say so.

(101,315 posts)which Paul conveniently ignores:
The Republican presidential nominee, whose path to the White House has been made more difficult by allegations of sexual misconduct, over which he has repeatedly threatened to sue, made the comments in an interview with a CBS affiliate in Miami after he was asked if there is "too much protection allowed in the First Amendment."
"Well in England they have a system where you can actually sue if someone says something wrong," Trump said. "Our press is allowed to say whatever they want and get away with it. And I think we should go to a system where if they do something wrong -- I'm a big believer, tremendous believer of the freedom of the press, nobody believes it stronger than me -- but if they make terrible, terrible mistakes and those mistakes are made on purpose to injure people, and I'm not just talking about me, I'm talking about anybody else, then yes, I think you should have the ability to sue them."
