Military bases forced to cancel child care programs due to Trump hiring freeze

Source: Raw Story

According to Military.com, military families with children in childhood development centers (CDC’s) at Fort Knox and U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, Germany, have been notified that the hourly care programs are being suspend and that no new enrolees will be taken.

“Effective immediately, no new children will be enrolled in the CDC,” Fort Knox garrison commander Col. Stephen Aiton wrote in a letter to base personnel. “Also, effective 27 February 2017, the CDC will no longer accommodate childcare for our hourly care and part day families until further notice.”

The letter went on to explain, “We are prevented from bringing new caregivers on board but are still having our usual staff turnover and illnesses, which creates challenges to maintaining ratios and providing quality childcare.”

At issue is an executive order signed by newly-elected President Donald Trump halting all federal hiring, and that base commanders would need to get permission from the Army Secretary before filling any positions, including child care providers.

You can do downsizing in a private business. The store shortens hours or
drops services or can't handle your business, you go elsewhere, to other
businesses.

That's not the case with government services. They are the only provider in
many instances. All he's doing is irritating the public, the voters. This is going
to get really good by 2018.

and their total lack of understanding the need for child care.

Richard Nixon vetoed or in some way made impossible (I honestly am forgetting the specifics and I don't feel like searching for them right now) government paid childcare for working mothers. He apparently thought that without that, the moms would stay home. As if that would magically do away with their need for childcare when they worked.

Women have always struggled. Couples have always struggled. Providing care for your children is difficult if you're not in a position to either hire full time help or to allow one partner to stay home full time. We absolutely need to understand that good childcare is fundamental to having strong families.

Military families are only a special case. All families need this.

Actions bring consequences, some that are unintentional. That is why you vet things and try to get input from a variety of disciplines before enacting a "bright idea". But apparently this is another area where tRump thinks he knows more than "the generals" and just blundered ahead without seeking input from the ones who would know the impact of a hiring freeze.

I was a director at a large daycare (long, long ago) and the centers are subject to rules regarding ratios of caregivers/teachers to children that are monitored by licensing agencies. We had unannounced spot checks for all kinds of things like cleanliness of the facility to ratios being within the guidelines. An employee out for illness required shifting of children to ensure that we met the regulations or calling in a part-time employee to fill the vacancy.

tRump is a person who often acts on his own ill thought out impulses, many times revealing that lack of impulse control in his tweets. On the face of it, he probably thought that a hiring freeze of Federal employees made him look tough....like a BOSS. In reality, he doesn't have the skills to run a hot dog cart but he doesn't know that.
