Customs agents search for immigration fugitive, check IDs of DOMESTIC flight passengers at JFK
Source: New York Daily News
Customs agents caused a flap at Kennedy Airport late Wednesday with a surprise checkpoint at the exit door of a domestic flight from San Francisco.
Passengers on Delta Flight 1583 were asked to show their IDs to armed U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents as they stepped off the aircraft onto the jet bridge, according to passengers who snapped photos and posted them online.
A CBP spokesman said Thursday that the agents were looking for one person.
...snip...
But at least one passenger said the search didn't seem targeted.

Last time this happened to me was in 1990 when I ended up on a Shuttle flight on which the Iraqi Diplomatic Corps were being expelled prior to the onset of the Gulf War.

(19,835 posts)..and what if it a student with only high school ID. I'm divorced and our minor kids fly between us with school IDs only - I don't trust them not to lose their passports.

(4,033 posts)We will have to carry no only a driver's licence, but also a special form attesting to our citizenship.
Then religion.
Then 'approved' religion.
Then party registration.
Then trains and 'detention camps' for 'undesirables'.

(4,419 posts)1. If they were looking for a specific individual there would be no need to check everyone's ID. That's absolutely not how they do these things.
2. CBP Agents have a very specific scope. They operate border entry and exit checkpoints. They patrol the border. That's it. They are allowed to set up some fixed and some "tactical" checkpoints inside the US within 100 miles of a US LAND border where they can ask questions of people passing through and select some for "secondary screening" if they are suspicious of their immigration status or the possibility that they are smuggling drugs. They absolutely cannot do this to domestic travelers at JFK, and they certainly cannot ask everyone deplaning for ID's.
The Supreme Court has already weighed in on these issues and the decisions are clear. CBP agents had no business being on that jetway.

(624 posts)Barack Obama presidency. Personally, it doesn't bother me one bit to hope that Mitch McConnell has a debilitating stroke on the floor of the Senate. Honestly, it doesn't. His whole goal appears to be nullification. Eff him.
