NAACP to announce plans for North Carolina economic boycott

Source: Associated Press

Feb. 24, 2017 4:47 AM EST

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The NAACP is announcing plans for an economic boycott of North Carolina to protest laws enacted by the state's conservative General Assembly, including one limiting LGBT protections.

The civil rights group issued a statement saying national President Cornell Brooks will speak Friday at a news conference in Raleigh.

In December, NAACP state leader the Rev. William Barber said he was seeking approval for a national boycott to pressure lawmakers over issues including the law known as House Bill 2. He also cited recent changes to the state elections board and the process for drawing electoral districts.

Now this is good news. Instead of resisting solely on behalf of our own particular issues, unite with other groups with issues of their own: I found it immensely gratifying to see Jews in Texas raising money to rebuild a mosque that had been burned down, in the meantime giving Muslims the keys to their own synagogue so the Muslim community in the town of Victoria could continue to conduct services while their mosque is being rebuilt. I am equally delighted by Muslims in Missouri raising funds to help repair a Jewish cemetery in University City where graves were recently desecrated.

Mr Trump, Mr Bannon, Ms Conway, Mr Miller, your Divide-and-Destroy plan will be defeated!

(Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte, Asheville, etc.) and large less populated areas that trend Republican. In 2010, too many Democrats stayed home and the Republicans took control of the State legislature for the first time since 1870.

that's why McCrory was voted out. NC is gerrymandered to ensure Republican rule. More folks voted D but the State House is full of Rs. I'm thrilled that Rev Barber is organizing the boycott. But it's not most North Carolinians that need waking up, it's the Republicans in Raleigh. Barber knows that, I thought y'all would too.

Trump really is a uniter. We're all united against him and his evil bosses Vlad and Bannon.

As President Whitmore famously said on the Fourth of July, we can't afford our petty differences anymore. We're all fighting for our right to exist, to survive. In the scary world of Donald Trump.

North Carolina loves it's college basketball! I live in Lexington, KY so I know what that's like. They will blame evil liberals, but still want the opportunity for their favorite team (whichever it is) to play close to home for a round sometimes, not to mention the financial losses, which will be painful.

And since I am one of those maniacal UK Wildcat fans,

Plus about $400 Million in lost tourism and businesses that decided not to come to NC in 2016. Voter suppression and gerrymandering kept the Republicans in the State House & Senate, but we got rid of the Governor.

This way, the GOP would be spread thin on countering the boycott verses concentrating on the one.

as it should. hopefully at the same time it will raise awareness and empathy among the people. but you can't expect empathy to be a factor in any republican's decision making, so hit 'em where it hurts. if i didn't live in NC, i wouldn't go there now. i want to go home so bad, but CA is home and i'm still not sure i can afford to live there. rock and a hard place.

Continuing to patronize businesses/corporations that advocate policies and political beliefs contrary to your own is self-defeating. Change will not come until you start depriving these bastards of their financial resources. Acquiring and accumulating wealth is the only language that they understand and you only get their attention by disrupting their ability to do so.
