Chicago PD hits back at Trump: We asked WH for help and never heard back

Source: The Hill

Chicago Superintendent of Police Eddie Johnson on Thursday fired back after President Trump said the city needed help dealing with its violence problem, saying the department asked the White House for help but still hasn't heard back.

"We have challenges with gun violence in several neighborhoods on the South and West sides of the city. It's unacceptable to me, to the Mayor and to Everyone who lives in Chicago," Johnson said in a statement.

"We've made requests to the White House and the Justice Department for them to support our work — from increasing federal gun prosecution to more FBI, DEA and ATF agents to more funding for mentoring, job training and more. We are still waiting for the administration's response to our request."

Trump, also on Thursday, tweeted that “Chicago needs help” after seven people were fatally shot in the city.

... in terms of gun violence why is Chicago right now is having way more problems than New York (my home town). I know gangs are responsible for much of Chicago current problems. But gangs exist in New York and New York has fewer murders than Chicago despite having three times the population.

snip;

Street gangs, once compared with Fortune 500 companies for their organizational skills and ruthless pursuit of profits, are now mostly made up of small, leaderless sets of members bound together by personal relationships rather than geographic or narcotics-trade ties. Personal insults and petty conflicts, often inflamed by social media posts, are just as likely to lead to a shooting as is competition for drug turf. Taken together, these changes have created an anything-goes atmosphere on the streets.

snip;

It is no secret that the nature of Chicago's street gangs has changed, resulting in less centralized and less hierarchical organizations. Chicago's top police officials have spoken frequently about how the splintering of the city's gangs has fueled the city's nonstop violence. Stature of the kind that Webster once enjoyed now means nothing, and gang members on the street have no bosses giving orders. The violent results have become increasingly unpredictable.

snip;

Two federal law enforcement officers who regularly work with Chicago police on gang violence said that, among the black gangs, the old hierarchical rules of engagement "are nonexistent." One of the officers said he traces the change, in part, to the dismantling of public housing high-rises in Chicago.

This was informative. It is going to take many people that are way smarter than I am to find a solution.

"New Orleans, St. Louis, Detroit, Baltimore and Newark all have higher figures when you drill down to a per-capita rate." - CNN

So why is Chicago being singled out...?

Oh! Never mind.

I was just wondering what are that factors that allowed a place like New York to significantly lower their crime rate. I am fully aware that other cites have a higher murder rate. Someone respond to my post with a news article from the Chicago tribune I am going to read it now.

I am just trying to understand the issue.

1. He uses Chicago as a scapegoat but doesn't provide assistance. Chicago/Illinois are majority Democratic.

2. He threatens to start DEA raids in recreational cannabis states, which are majority Democratic.

This is how Trumpy operates.

But, it doesn't matter to his supporters. To them, as long as he mentions something, it means he's worked on it.

Now with the local police given authority and EO, an ORDER to check immigration status "papers please" on everyone, people will call police for help even less.

yeah Republicans where are the JOBS? those neighborhoods have LOCAL ordinances and LOCAL zoning 'laws' where residents are forbidden even a home based family business. Get rid of those stupid local laws and more people can create their own 'job', their own small business.

The small cylindrical kind that come out of a gun. These aren't his kind of people and are probably brown, which is a sin as long as the person isn't rich.
