Ryan: I 'Recognize And Appreciate Concerns' Of Millions Losing Coverage
Source: Talking Points Memo
By ESME CRIBB Published MARCH 13, 2017, 5:01 PM EDT
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) said Monday that nobody will have "the rug pulled out from under them" by a Republican bill to repeal Obamacare, which the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimated would leave 24 million more people uninsured over the next 10 years.
I recognize and appreciate concerns about making sure people have access to coverage," Ryan said in a statement. "And, as we have long said, there will be a stable transition so that no one has the rug pulled out from under them."
He highlighted segments of the CBO's report noting that the bill would "provide massive tax relief" and "dramatically reduce the deficit," and said the legislation is "just the first of a three-pronged approach."
"Its important to note that this report does not take into consideration additional steps Congress and the Trump administration are taking that will further lower costs and increase choices," Ryan said.

McCarthy Says AHCA Will 'Increase Access,' Glosses Over Drop In Coverage
By ESME CRIBB Published MARCH 13, 2017, 5:11 PM EDT
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said Monday that the Republican bill to repeal Obamacare "will empower Americans with access, choice and affordability." He avoided any mention of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office's estimate that the bill would leave millions more people uninsured.
"This report by the CBO confirms that this first phase of health care reform, the American Health Care Act, uses conservative and free-market principles that will empower Americans with access, choice and affordability," McCarthy said in a statement.
The CBO estimated that 14 million would lose coverage by 2018, just in time for the midterm elections, with a total of 24 million people losing their insurance over the next 10 years under House Republicans' bill.
McCarthy did not mention those estimates in his statement. He instead railed against Obamacare, which he claimed "continues to collapse under its own weight," and promised that the next stages of Republican health care legislation "will only further reduce costs and increase access to health care."

They do care and care bunches about the poor little millionaires having to pay anything to help anyone else. They also care that poor people are getting helped, that won't do either, despite their lip service, they are heartless slime.

(23,094 posts)Convert Medicaid and Medicare to vouchers and block grants to states, allow the states to remove all price and increase restrictions as well as coverage mandates so the grants and vouchers cover nothing, raise the age of SS and privatize it. That's the R's wet dream and what they want to change. OK, well that and ending any subsidies quickly! The rest of what he said is just lies.

(5,733 posts)very nervously, I might add - who ran rapidly down a list of "benefits" of the new whatever-it-is-called replacement act, one of them being the repeal of the MEDICARE payroll tax. I thought that I had misheard him and played back that bit several times on the DVR. Yep, that is what he said.
What do Medicare and the Medicare payroll tax have to do with the ACA? Maybe I am just not fully informed; however, my first thought was, "Is this a way to slip in defunding Medicare, by tacking this onto the replacement of the ACA?"
I had the distinct feeling that this Representative realized that he had slipped up when he said it, because he very rapidly delivered a barrage of words and diverted away from that subject. The interviewer didn't follow up on the statement.
Has anyone else heard this?

We need to get the word out on this.
It will seem appealing to the uninformed among us as "more money on YOUR paycheck" it will be sold to be. Some more money in your paycheck when you find yourself with no health care being the plan you've been paying into your entire life no longer exists!

But I won't be doing that any time soon because I can't afford to do so. "Access" and "freedom" when it comes to health insurance mean nothing to many Americans who depend on the subsidies in the ACA and will lost them in exchange for measly tax credits.

That's the one that talks about "the least of these". I want to start hearing all these self-proclaimed/self-congratulatory holier-than-thou "Christianists" quote THIS passage, if they expect me to listen to ANY cockamamie bullshit they're trying to sell - THAT'S ONLY GONNA HURT PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THE POOR!
To review:
35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? 40 And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,[a] you did it to me.
41 Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. 44 Then they also will answer, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you? 45 Then he will answer them, saying, Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.

Hey Ryan,
I'll make this real simple request, simple enough even for you to understand! Show us an example how, say, a family of 4 with just a working father making minimum wage, how exactly he'll be able to provide health care for his family! More people (and reporters) need to ask this question of the Republicans.
You disagree with the CBO's response...show us in black and white exactly how it will work for those who will lose their ACA. It can't be that hard for you to do since it's basically your program and you have all the answers (after 7 years of working on it.)
Put your figures out in public to show how the under and uninsured will benefit.
Betcha can't do it...or won't!
