Trump administration ramps up efforts to block media
Source: CNN
President Donald Trump said Friday that his administration "can get around the media when the media doesn't tell the truth, so I like that." The president was referring to his Twitter account. But recently he has taken steps to control news coverage.
The Trump administration has given preferential access to favorable outlets while excluding others -- a move critics say is dangerously reminiscent of state-controlled media. In the latest incident, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson invited Fox News to cover his meeting at the Korean Demilitarized Zone, on the North-South Korea border, but denied access to the press pool that provides all media outlets with an account of the secretary's activities.
"Fox unilateral network team was allowed into this meeting -- pool asked for access and was blocked," wrote CNN's Pamela Boykoff, the author of Friday's pool report. "Local embassy official told the pool it was 'the Secretary's decision.'"
Tillerson was already being criticized for refusing to allow pool reporters to accompany him on his plane during the trip, which had been a standard practice for his predecessors at the State Department. Tillerson did allow a reporter from the conservative Independent Journal Review to accompany him, but not as a pool reporter.

(6,916 posts)How to fact check Trump without repeating lies. This is one of the most important clips I've seen in the past few months. I wish more media members would watch it.

Cutting healthcare so rich pay less, cutting Meals on Wheels when he personally causes us to spend that amount of $, 3million, every week he goes to Mara Lago. He's a small minded, hate filled, greedy, ignorant asshole, at his best. He's an embarassment to every American with a brain.

(81,201 posts)Typical CEO who figures he's answerable to nobody, or at least not the "great unwashed." With Exxon-Mobil, he at least had to be responsive to a board of directors, but then again, they were all like him - ultra-privileged, wealthy, pampered, pandered to, fawned over, admired and envied for their wealth, power, and privilege.
NOBODY in this bunch is used to full public accountability in the full light of day, out from behind those closed executive suites in the top floors where most of the elevators don't go and you need some sort of key card to get to and the security guards are there to make sure you don't even get as far as that elevator door.

(9,865 posts)...make our MSM more and more adversarial and finally after years of mostly taking dictation, they will get back to real journalism.
Democracy needs an adversarial, skeptical press. Not obeisance in order to get "access" which is how they've thought of their job until now.
Bring on the Murrows! Bring on the Bernsteins! Those guys weren't hampered by "no access".

(1,606 posts)But journalism is stronger than ever, the coverage has been pretty good from outside the US, and in print journalism.
Just don't expect corporate profit-cable infotainment "news" to be changing their approach. They are only as "daring" as the bottom line dictates. It's really infuriating that so many keep expecting they will suddenly become journalists and "blast open" some big scoop.
Granted, if Murdoch, Koch Bros etc want Trump out, we can expect to see cable "news" accomplishing that goal. Until then, no.
It's almost humorous that the trump admin wants to block cable news from access, they were such a huge part in helping to get these fuckers into office, after all. It's really insane.
