Teenager in Israel arrested for JCC bomb threats in America

Source: New York Daily News

A teenager living in Israel has been arrested for making some of the recent bomb threats at Jewish community centers across America, authorities said Thursday.

Israeli police announced on Twitter the arrest of a 19-year-old for phoning in the phony threats. Authorities in Israel worked with the FBI and other international law enforcement for the arrest.

The suspect was not immediately identified.

While 19 is a teenager, it is also an adult

Because he was deemed unfit.

He also called in a couple threats to delta airlines last year which forced changed to the flight plan.

Not a settler, not ultra-Orthodox. Sounds like a young man with mental problems.

My list of suspects were (in order):

1. Kid(s), probably male, probably Jewish. Quite possibly a kid wanting to avoid JCC basketball practice.

2. Generic cranks, of no particular political/religious motivation

3. Maybe --- and distantly -- a BDS type gone awry.

So far, the people arrested have been:

A. Jewish kid, apparently militarily-unfit
B. Bernie supporter trying to frame his ex-girlfriend in a really stupid scheme

I eliminated from the list: (1) actual Islamic terrorist types and (2) actual white supremacists types because:

(1) actual terrorists don't give warnings. They kill people, then take credit. Their goal is death, and death takes surprise.

(2) white supremacists types (at least in the USA) are generally related to biker gangs/Aryan Nation guys. These guys are generally ex-cons and do serious criminal stuff, like meth dealing and human trafficking. As a result, they are amazingly law-abiding except for their chosen profession. One does not speed when one has a trunk full of meth and two prostitutes in the car. Plus, an ex-con is not going to risk life in prison on a third strike basis based on a prank call. If they wanted to do something, they'd drive by and shoot up the shul at 11:30 on Shabbat.

Do you have any thoughts on the Jewish cemetery vandalism incidents that have also recently occurred? Do you apply the same sort of thinking in those cases, or is that a different kettle of fish?

Would be the same people who vandalize any cemetery -- drunk HS boys being assholes with no particular agenda, probably white, not because white people are bad, but white HS kids are far more likely to have their own cars. so they can get to the cemetery.

I'd start with whatever HS football team wasn't playing the next day and work my way forward.

(And, yes, before I was a lawyer and then a Congressional staffer, I was a prosecutor in NYC, and a beat cop before that (and an MP before that).

21. Think donkey, not zebra

I thought about our exchange a bit overnight and something my son (a doctor) taught me about what he learned in medical school many decades ago: think donkey, not zebra.

Specifically, when diagnosing something, let's say you see hoof prints. And have a fuzzy dark picture of a four-legged animal. It's not a cow or a bull or an ox or the like -- no horns and just isn't shaped like a bovine. It's horse-shaped, but too small and stocky. Has a mane and its face is a little squared off. You're in rural Texas, not Africa.

It's probably a donkey. Maybe a mule or a jenny. It's probably not a zebra, however.

Same idea applies from medicine to police work, like a murder. You start with the spouse/lover, then the kids, then friends and neighbors, employees, and work your way out.

Same with things like prank calls and vandalism. Start at home. Then work your way out.

Above all, don't start screaming "zebra!" (or "Trump!" (if a Democrat) or "Muslims!" (if a Republican)) because it probably makes you look like a dumb ass.
