NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) An Army veteran was hit with new charges of murder as an act of terrorism and hate Monday in the alleged random stabbing a black man to death with a sword in Midtown.
James Harris Jackson, 28, was arraigned last week in the slaying of 66-year-old Timothy Caughman.
In a court appearance Monday, his charges were upgraded in a grand jury indictment. He had already been accused of second-degree murder as a hate crime. Jackson is also facing several weapons charges.
Meanwhile, as CBS2s Ali Bauman reported, more is being revealed about what may have motivated the attack and what else the accused was plotting.

(2,270 posts)I question the need to have "Army Veteran" so prominent in the Headline. Mention it in the story as its part of his background but as displayed it seems to tar ALL veterans with the brush of hatred. As a PROUD Army veteran I can tell you that that is most assuredly NOT the case.
Yes this was an act of hatred and Terrorism BUT its as abhorrent to most of us veterans as it is to the general public. If not more so in fact as it flies in the face of the oath we swore and the camaraderie we (mostly) share. As written it put me in immediate defensive mode. I'm sure (hope) that that wasn't the intention but .......
Not all veterans are rightwing nutjobs, there's plenty of us progressives too and we do/did what we could to advance OUR outlook among each other.
There may come a time when "we", I speak of the left/progressive part of the Nation, will have need of veterans and their specialized skills/expertise and its counter-productive to alienate them from our fold.

When a rabid bat is flying around in your house biting your family, you don't shoo him outside because you're racist against bats. You throw him out because you love the people inside. It doesn't matter if the bat was born in your attic.
