JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Lawmakers want Mississippi to change how it handles executions, with changes meant to overcome legal challenges to execution drugs, and possibly allow the state to use electrocution and the firing squad as death penalty methods.
The Senate agreed on Tuesday to changes to HB 638, sending it to Gov. Phil Bryant for his approval or veto after the House agreed Monday.
The measure lists four preferred execution methods. The first is lethal injection using a three-drug mixture. After that, in order, the bill specifies poison gas, electrocution and firing squad as execution methods.

(110,913 posts)If the state wants to murder its citizens, an OD of fentanyl is simple, quick, and final, and the drug is widely available. They don't even need an IV site if the citizen in question is an addict with no veins left.
I'm against the DP but if they're going to do it, they need to do it right. Horrific pain (electricity) and blood spatter (firing squad) should not be up for debate.

(11,843 posts)Suffocation is painful, but a nitrogen chamber is not suffocation.
A buildup of CO2 drives the need to breath, not lack of oxygen. In an atmosphere lacking O2, there is no buildup of CO2, so one breathes normally as CO2 leaves the lungs, but with no O2 to go into the blood, one passes out and will die within minutes.

Nitrogen does not require high pressurization. That is a ridiculous assertion, as almost 80% of what you are breathing right now is nitrogen. Remove the oxygen and you would breath normally, blowing off CO2 from your blood into your lungs, relieving any out-of-breath sensation, until you passed out eventually died from lack of oxygen. People have died from nitrogen asphyxiation accidentally and there are no signs of struggle or trauma. They just pass out, then die.
Not that I would wish that on any one. I'm pretty much against the death penalty, I just dislike "facts" being pushed that are completely false.

I suspect that it is the perception of cruelty (suffocation) even if that wouldn't physically be the case.

(8,747 posts)Murder is unlawful killing with malice aforethought. If the State defines a particular form of Homicide as Legal, it is not unlawful. Just like the use of Deadly Force in a case of Self-Defense is not Murder.
So what form of Execution is "right"?

I suggest you're talking about something you know nothing about. Having the guy murdered in turn in my name would have made the whole thing far worse than it was and it was a tough sell since he was suspected of 2 other, similar murders.
Don't project onto people you don't know.

(15,805 posts)How does any civilized, sane, human being sit in a room and actually list their personal preferences for killing other people as though they're talking about favorite movies? I'm surprised that they would limit the choices when deep in their black hearts, the "Lawmakers" of Mississippi pine for the most barbarous torture scenes depicted on episodes of Game of Thrones and Vikings.

(11,686 posts)We can go back to the cowboy and Indian days where we can just hang or do firing squad. We can have public executions while we have 8-track music blaring from behind...of course in Disco. Let's go back to where you are only allowed to have sex in missionary position. Women are not allowed to own anything and if her husband dies it goes to the next man in line. If someone steals a horse you can hang them. Let's take the vote away from women and any people of color. You can open carry a gun anywhere and any time and no registration what so ever. Slapping and abusing women and children will only be considered keeping them in line. A husband will be allowed to violently rape his wife. Animal abuse will not even be thought of...just done. No regulations what so ever on anything except the regulation that you have to respect rich white men at all times. Is America looking great again?

(25,911 posts)If states are going to be barbaric and execute people, I think the firing squad is the most "humane," since there's no way they will use the guillotine, which is the most "humane."

We used to have Public executions. But it was so barbaric Americans started turning against the death penalty. The death lovers could not have that so they close them all from the public to keep them supported.
I say if you're going to have them make them public and make parents take all their children above the age of eight. Let's get our Barbarism them out in the open
