Barry Goldwater's daughter backs Dem Carmona in U.S. Senate race
Source: Arizona Daily Star
The daughter of one of Arizonas most famous conservatives has endorsed Democrat Richard Carmona in the U.S. Senate race.
Joanne Goldwater, the oldest daughter of late-Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater, announced her support for Carmona on Wednesday, saying Carmona will put Arizonas interests over ideology.
Carmona, a former U.S. Surgeon General from Tucson, is facing Republican Jeff Flake in the U.S. Senate general election. Flake, a six-term Congressman from Mesa, pummeled Wil Cardon by 49 percentage points in Tuesdays primary.
Congressman Flake has tried to claim the 'conservative' mantel, but my dad's brand of conservatism is not reflected by Flake or the modern-day Republican Party," said Joanne Goldwater in a statement released by the Carmona campaign.

(297,451 posts)Thanks Newsjock!
I use to live in AZ back in the day when Goldwater was running for Prez and I couldn't care less about politics but I remember my Mom and her friend handing out flyers for him.
"Her endorsement spurns the man who once ran an organization carrying the name of her father.
Before winning a seat in Congress in 2000, Flake was the executive director of the Goldwater Institute for seven years. The Institute, a Phoenix-based conservative public policy and research organization, was founded in 1988 with the blessing of the late Senator Barry Goldwater, the organizations website says."

(26,641 posts)He was intelligent, funny, and a complete gentleman. His ideas were conservative but, unlike today's conservatives, he loved America and Americans. I've always been a liberal, but Senator Goldwater inspired me with his honesty and common sense. Seems his daughter has inherited the best of her father.

(33,982 posts)Imagine how much less vitriolic politics would be right now, if the republican side of congress, house and senate, consisted of people like him.
I still couldn't vote for him, but goddamn, we could at least get some shit done.

(33,982 posts)he was a different breed of cat entirely from the Republicans today. He could be worked with. He would compromise. He wasn't a goddamn stone wall with razor blades sticking out of it. We could at least negotiate with him.
I'd take that over what the Republican party has become.
