Glenn Beck Returning To TV With Dish Network Deal
Source: Huffington Post
Glenn Beck is returning to television after a little over a year of being away from it. Beck's company announced Wednesday that it has signed a deal with Dish Network, the satellite operator, to bring his online television network, TheBlazeTV, to the airwaves. The move completes a kind of circle for Beck, who left his Fox News show in June of 2011.
The New York Times was the first to report the deal. The channel will launch at 5 PM on Wednesday, when Beck's eponymous program airs. In a blog post, Chris Balfe, CEO of The Blaze, signaled that the Dish deal will be followed by others, on cable and on satellite. He wrote that a year of Web TV has allowed the company to take the steps needed to return to the terrestrial platform:
But now, a year later, everything has changed. Our subscribers' enthusiasm and support has allowed us to make the necessary investments in programming and infrastructure, and we're now in a position to launch a cable and satellite channel without losing control. We have the best staff, the best talent, world-class facilities and great distribution partners lined up, and we've done it all while ensuring that we answer to no one except our own audience.
The big question, of course, is whether Beck can replicate the heights of influence he reached with Fox News. He told the Times that, across his various platforms, he is being seen and heard by more people than ever before. More than 300,000 people had subscribed to his Web network as of March, and Beck's radio show is still one of the biggest in the nation. But he has not been able to penetrate popular discourse in the same way he did when he had millions of Fox News viewers -- as well as eagle-eyed "Daily Show" staffers -- watching his every move.

(19,537 posts)They are making the same play to control the now merged Sirius/XM satellite radio service that Murdoch and News Corp tried to do some years back.
If they can push a very now STUPIDLY RUN Dish Network out of business the risk is that Liberty will have monopoly control over all satellite media services (radio and television) and then perhaps things like FSTV, LINK TV, Sirius Left, etc. will get dropped when there is no competition in this space, and that will take away any alternatives in areas where Clear Channel and right wing radio have over the air monopolies too. That to me sounds like a scary time ahead if we're not careful.
Which makes me hate the absolutely STUPID management at Dish Network that is alienating the very customer base that would be drawn to them if they programmed their service more intelligently.

(32,047 posts)For those who watch Free Speech TV (which includes Democracy Now and Thom Hartmann) via Dish, if you wish to drop Dish over Glenn Beck, FSTV streams online at freespeech.org.
This thread sounds like the Parents Television Council complaining about paying for MTV and FX in the basic cable bill.

(3,913 posts)They are only carrying GBTV on the Top250 and higher packages (or $5/mo ala carte!), so I'm not getting it, but is reasonable to complain to them anyway, since broadcasting his channel over the sats consumes bandwidth that could be going to higher quality broadcasts of the channels that I do get.
I encourage all other Dish subscribers to call (800-333-DISH) and complain about them carrying the channel. Make sure they pass the information up to their supervisor, and to the people in charge of programming.

They must be trying to alienate all of the smart viewers.

(19,537 posts)Swapping AMC and Big Ten Network for Pac 12 Network and Glen Beck as an Iowa grad? That slap is too big for me even if they are one of the only companies in satellite broadcasting of radio and television that isn't affiliated with Liberty Communications. Moving to Comcast around here now, shortly which is going to be a pain in the butt!
BTW, if any of you have a lot of content like Thom Hartmann shows on their EHD (external hard disks) and don't want to lose them even if they keep their Dish Network receiver, your EHD's (external hard disks) will be made useless then. Get everything consolidated on to your Dish receiver (if you want to just keep the receiver to have that content) before dropping them if you want to continue to access that content or stay on them minimally until you can get that content off.
