Romney Camp Downplays Debate Expectations

Source: ABC

In a memo sent to surrogates today, Romney senior adviser Beth Myers sets the expectations for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney low - very low - compared to the "ample rhetorical gifts" of his opponent. The memo says President Obama has a "significant advantage" heading into the first debate.

"President Obama is a uniquely gifted speaker, and is widely regarded as one of the most talented political communicators in modern history," Myers writes, calling Obama a "universally acclaimed public speaker." Myers' memo is the latest in pre-debate jockeying by both campaigns to set their candidate's expectations low, while raising expectations for their opponent.

Beyond his "natural gifts" for oratory, Meyers argues that Obama has "substantial debate experience under his belt." "This will be the eighth one-on-one presidential debate of his political career. For Mitt Romney, it will be his first," she says. Obama, in her words, has had "extensive seasoning under the bright lights of the debate stage."

Myers predicts that President Obama will use these advantages to go negative and attack Romney on the debate stage.

His skill and knowledge just fell in his lap. Unlike R-Money who sweated blood for everything he has.

no matter how hard the rightwing extremists already are claiming Mitt won.

so ridiuclous this year, being that noone is changing their mind so there are no voters for Mitt to convince but his own.

Landslide Obama.

and in the deep red states it matters little as Obama isn't planning on or needing those electoral votes.

PA won't even be close.
(and judge has ruled in majority of those states against the republicans, and I bet in PA they will not have it apply in 2012 at all. It will be pushed forward for 2016 where there will be time to get ID out imho

considering how many times he's run for office.
But he just doesn't have the brains.
It's not just Obama's eloquence, it's his intelligence.

Christ almighty. A "natural gift" for eloquence? I guess there really IS no one as Irish as Barack Obama!

McCain and Palin did this too. As psy ops, it's a pretty weak and obvious ploy. AND--it only works if Romney's performance exceeds the low expectations they establish. Which, low as they are, I doubt he can.

wasn't it just a couple of weeks ago before all this shit hit the fan that they were saying that Rmoney would have an advantage over the President in the debates?

It's starting to look like every day, another "Hail Mary pass".

He is a constitutional law expert, has served in the house and senate, and as the F-ing President Of The United States Of America! F-in A!!

The stench will be strong, while Mitt will melt under the pressure of trying desperately to not appear as the dolt he really is.

I almost forgot - he has a memory for wonkish details - Romney can't remember not to insult people just by opening his mouth.

He's good looking too - as apposed to a Chuckie doll.

Are those the same "rhetorical gifts" that the Republicans have been mocking for 4 years by the whole teleprompter meme?

The irony is that they are correct and yet they have absolutely no credibility to make such a claim after 4 years of proclaiming otherwise.
