Obama campaign registers 250,000 voters in North Carolina as it tries to keep the state close
Source: AP via Washington Post
RALEIGH, N.C. Dozens of volunteers armed with clipboards and voter registration forms gather at President Barack Obamas field office here every day. Their mission: Fan out across the city seeking new voters in this rapidly growing state.
Are you registered to vote at your current address? asks Douglas Johnston, a volunteer wooing voters outside the county courthouse. Do you know about early voting?
The effort, it seems, has borne fruit to the tune of more than 250,000 new registered voters in North Carolina since April 2011, according to Obamas team. Thats more new voters than the campaign has registered anywhere else in the country.
Its an eye-popping total in a state that Obama won by just 14,000 votes four years ago. And the flood of new voters presumably a chunk of them Democrats could help keep North Carolina within the presidents reach in a year when everything else here seems to be working in Republican Mitt Romneys favor.

Along with the placement of the convention in NC it is laying a foundation for NC to become blue again. If you can get a voter to vote for a party in three straight national elections for the same party then the likelyhood that they will identify with that party for the rest of their life is astronomically high.
Loved this part of the article
But less than six weeks from Election Day, Romney is spending millions of dollars in television advertising in North Carolina, defending territory that remains more conservative than most of the states that will decide the election. That raises questions about his chances in places like Ohio, Florida and Virginia, where polls show him trailing the president.

It sure is nice to know that the prophet of the mooney church can try to influence American politics so much...

(31,234 posts)voter guide? I used to get those in the mail, and I can't remember if it came from the County or State party. But it made it so much easier to choose Judges, and other "nonpartisan" offices. It also helped with the referendum items on the ballot, which can be very complex, and you're just expected to an "Yes" or "No".

(19,841 posts)Most of these are in the mountain counties except for Guilford, Alamance, and the outer banks. They acquired the DRE's under the Bush administration, from Republican vendors:
Touchscreen only - 24 -
Alamance, Alleghany, Brunswick, Burke, Caswell, Cherokee, Davidson, Davie, Guilford, Haywood, Henderson,
Jackson, Lenoir, Madison, Mecklenburg, Pamlico, Pender, Perquimans, Polk, Rutherford, Surry,
Transylvania, Warren, Wilson
Mixed Systems
Election Day: Optical Scan with Touchscreens for ADA, Early Voting: Touchscreens only - 8
Bladen, Craven, Cumberland, Forsyth, Haywood, Lee, Moore,
New Hanover
Election Day: Optical Scan and Touchscreens for ADA and same for Early Voting - 1
Dare
Optical Scan & Automark on Election day/Touchscreens for Early Voting- 3
Catawba, Sampson, Union
-----------------------
Seems to me it would be best not to do early voting if in one of these "mixed" counties that uses their touchscreens for early
voting. The optical scan AT LEAST has a paper trail...

(35,699 posts)The Obama campaign wins even if they eventually lose NC. And there is at least an even chance they could narrowly win it. They are in better shape there then they were at this point in 2008.

(84,711 posts)In '08 there were McCain/Palin signs and stickers everywhere. There was high energy for Palin and you could feel the RR all pumped up to defeat Obama. However, there was a lot of Obama support and even in my Repug neighborhood there were many Obama signs leading to Obam's win in NC.
I see fewer signs and bumper stickers for either candidate this year, but more Obama than Romney. I think Romney is such a terrible crash cart candidate that even the Tea Party supporters and RR don't want to advertise him. it's possible that many of them will stay home...while Obama's supporters will have the edge once again with enthusiastic support.
