Obama blocks Chinese purchase of US wind farms

Source: AP via HuffPo

WASHINGTON — Citing national security risks, President Barack Obama on Friday blocked a Chinese company from owning four wind farm projects in northern Oregon near a Navy base where the U.S. military flies unmanned drones and electronic-warfare planes on training missions.

It was the first time in 22 years that a U.S. president has blocked such a foreign business deal.

Obama's decision was likely to be another irritant in the increasingly tense economic relationship between the U.S. and China. It also comes against an election-year backdrop of intense criticism from Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney, who accuses Obama of not being tough enough with China.

In his decision, Obama ordered Ralls Corp., a company owned by Chinese nationals, to divest its interest in the wind farms it purchased earlier this year near the Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility in Boardman, Ore.

Business Week has a basically empty Company Overview

Some transparency by the government would be nice. What is the nature of the credible threat to national security associated with this company? If I am a U.S. citizen of Chinese descent would I also be blocked from establishing wind farms near the Air Force base? What is the military doing with drones there? Just asking ...

should be blocked, they usually test planes & other military equipment on this base. If they were to own this property so close to a base it would be too easy to hack signals or anything else they can steal

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]From what I've seen of their air pollution, they ought to be investing in and building wind farms in their OWN country where they're desperately needed.

They don't need to be here and the President was exactly right to send them packing.

All they want to do is get the right to take it back to their country. It very very frustrating how they keep snatching jobs away from the US. Have we gone to China and Taken jobs from them and brought them back to the US? does that ever happen?

Along with putting up passive EM signal scanners to monitor the frequencies around the base to figure out what they're using to control the drones so they can jam them.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]That didn't even occur to me until some time later.

Obviously, the President had all his reasons for banning the deal well thought out.
