(4,788 posts)called to alert residents in low areas that they may need to evacuate. Our house is in an older, small community on the South River, really an estuary of the Chesapeake Bay. From our living room you can see South River, which is about 250 feet away. Our house is an old beach house converted to year-round living (badly converted, but that is another story), but it does sit higher than some of our neighbors. I've got 3 dogs and very little money so I'm hoping to ride it out.
At work (I work in DC) we just got an e-mail telling us to take our computers home with us this weekend and to forward our phones to our home or cell.
I hope that this is all hype, but I don't think it is in my heart of hearts.

(9,893 posts)I'm on a rise in Rockville/Gaithersburg, and during the derecho two years ago, my east-facing bedroom windows and the whole section story started shaking. The derecho only lasted a few minutes. We lost power for a week.
This thing is coming from the east, will last much longer and will have close to tropical strength winds and much stronger gusts. I'm thinking about catching a plane tomorrow to make a early Thanksgiving with my Mom in Michigan and not coming back 'til the lights come on.
Somehow, the election isn't my #1 worry right now.

(329 posts)It was never going to hit as a true hurricane. But actually it means it will be worse because as it turns into a noreaster (It won't have a true defined center) the wind field and rain field will spread out farther.
