If it were me, I would hold a Presidential address in early December and say the following: "The night I was inaugurated back in 2009, the Republicans leadership held a meeting and plotted to obstruct everything I would do even before my administration began to govern. Well Speaker Bohnner and Leader McConnell, the voters have spoken. What's it going to be this time? Are you going to filibuster me 380 times the way you did in my first term? Are you going to continue to let people lose their jobs, homes, and a shot at the American dream for a vain attempt to score political points?

In case you forgot, we were all elected to help the people of the United States of America. You took an oath to uphold the Constitution and not to Grover Norquist. The Bush tax cuts were in effect for 8 years and I even extended them for two more years. We tried it your way and it didn't work. I'm putting you on notice that we are not going to try the same failed policy of the past decade. If you want common ground, I will listen, but your ideas were flatly rejected by a clear major of the electorate. You can help or get out of the wat. The choice is yours.

endorse this. All these so called pundits need to get out of the way. We elected President Obama on his platform. We did not elect Mitt Romney or as one pundit suggests, put him in power anywhere in this Administration. President Obama also promised to work for the people that elected him. That is a pledge he cannot and must not break. If the GOP bucks him, they have us to deal with. So these pundits need to get out of the way. Do they think we who voted for this President are less than those on the Right? Then they got a lot to learn about us. I want this fight with the GOP. It is due time we settle this. The election is over. Pandering is no longer necessary to get elected (lest be maligned as the angry black man).

This is for real. Let the cuts expire. No exceptions.

That expiration is wrapped tighter than John Lithgow in his last appearance on Dexter.

First of all, a coherent bill extending the cuts has to pass in the House, which could happen, but they're so full of shit that I doubt they can even do that right.

Then, it has to pass in the Senate, which will never happen. So the President probably won't get a bill to veto.

But he couldn't have known that when he made his agreement two years ago, so he snookered the Republicans into a very carefully chosen time frame for expiration. It expires before his first term as President ends.

So if the Senate went Republican, the President would still be there to veto an extension.

If the President lost his bid for re-election, and the Senate went Republican, he would still be there to veto an extension.

And in case he broke both his hands playing basketball and couldn't sign a veto, he set the cuts to expire on a Friday in January just as Congress goes into a recess, so that he can pocket veto it without a signature.

That's not to say that the President wished the tax cuts for the middle class to expire. Democrats in the Senate passed such a measure with scarcely a Republican vote, but the Republican House blocked it. They don't give a shit about the middle class, except as a hostage.

But the President really, really wants the tax cuts for the wealthy to expire, so I don't expect him to bother to negotiate much. We may send a quick extension for the middle class up the flagpole just after the new Congress convenes, so that we can tack all of the Republicans with the onus of raising our taxes in the next elections, and if they're smart they'll take the offer.

But they're not smart, so I don't think we will have to worry about them doing the right thing.

The error of my ways is clear to me in hindsight: I simply did not account for the fact that such a shockingly hypocritical move could be completely ignored by the press and the public... and Democratic House candidates? What the fuck?

Conservative enthusiasm was not dampened, I presume because they have no idea it ever happened.

But it seems to have been the critical balance in half a dozen critical Senate elections, most of which went our way.

Maybe the idea was that the tax-cut-hostage game could be played again this January. Maintaining the cuts for the middle class while letting them expire for the rich is the closest thing to an actual economic stimulus measure we're likely to get, so perhaps the Democrats decided they would try, one last time, to elicit a compromise....

Eh, whatever. It was a bad guess on my part, but it was still a very good year for the Ds.
