Paula Broadwell Lawyers Up [hires criminal defense lawyer]

Source: ABA Journal

As details continue to emerge about a federal investigation of hostile email reportedly sent by Paula Broadwell to a woman whose family is friendly with ex-CIA director David H. Petraeus and his wife, there is news that Broadwell, a high-achieving West Point graduate who co-authored a biography about the retired four-star general, has lawyered up.

She is now being represented by Robert F. Muse, a longtime Washington, D.C., criminal defense attorney, the Washington Post reports.

Although news accounts have not said that Broadwell is facing any criminal charges, she and Petraeus, who quit his job at the CIA last week after acknowledging that he had had an extramarital affair, both turned over their computers to investigators. They reportedly showed that Broadwell had some classified documents in her possession and investigators thought, apparently incorrectly, that she might have obtained them from Petraeus.

Additionally, federal lawmakers have questioned why they weren't informed earlier of a probe with national security implications.

Interesting to me that the ABA Journal posted this article under its "Internet Law" section.

3. I heard she was trying to break into his CIA email account.

Broadwell was sending anonymous letters to another woman, threatening her and telling her to keep away from Petreaus.
To send threatening emails is a federal crime so the FBI got involved and tracked down the anonymous emails to Broadwell.

From there they found that she was trying to access Petreaus's CIA email account and at that point it got serious.

So it sounds like a defense attorney might be pretty essential at this point.

5. I know she is being accused of all these things but...

...who knows if she did or didn't do these things, or if someone else did, or if she is being framed or set up or what.
No one has heard her side yet. Her father's comments in the NY Daily News sound like she is being used as a scapegoat for something.
Again, who knows. Not anyone right now, even though I agree she is being accused. Hacking is a crime, too, but who knows who is hacking what.
Maybe someone else hacked his computer but it is easier to blame her right now. Again, who knows. I think she is innocent until proven guilty.

7. Petraus shocked to hear of emails, associates say (Broadwell's threatening emails to another woman)

CIA Director David Petraeus was shocked to learn last summer that his mistress was suspected of sending threatening emails warning another woman to stay away from him, former staff members and friends told The Associated Press Monday.

Petraeus told these associates his relationship with the second woman, Tampa socialite Jill Kelley, was platonic, though his biographer-turned-lover Paula Broadwell apparently saw her as a romantic rival. Retired Gen. Petraeus also denied to these associates that he had given Broadwell any of the sensitive military information alleged to have been found on her computer, saying anything she had must have been provided by other commanders during reporting trips to Afghanistan.

The associates spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss the matters, which could be part of an FBI investigation. more

The plot thickens. Who knew Petraus was such a lover man?

I still find it hard to believe - doesn't the CIA Director have enough to do in his actual job? How does he find time for this sort of thing, if it did all happen?
It is just mind boggling.

15. Really?

How does any human with a job and kids or a combination thereof, find time for sex? Obviously, they have just as much free time as any other executive. Yep, that's what they are; executives. Actually, they have many minions to do their bidding, and probably have more free time than someone who works eight hours a day at Target. Their temptation is even greater, however. They work in a testosterone laden environment with life and death all around, weapons galore, and women wanting a step up the ladder or just a taste of power that comes from laying her head on his or her pillow. Doesn't surprise me a bit. This story is as old as time and the Bible.

10. We'll never know what really happened.

We'll only be told what the CIA and other Powers that Be decide we should know. They'll pick the one who is supposed to fall on their sword and close the curtains. the important struggle will be between Neo-con forces and WH forces which sometimes have different aims in our foreign policy. The key here is the Benghazi story and what we're told about that will be based on military industrial complex concerns that we are never told of.

12. Well, it is that kind of backdrop that makes me wonder if Paula is being set up as a scapegoat
Mon Nov 12, 2012, 11:22 PM
Nov 2012

I think the one big word Republicans took from all that Bill Clinton went through with Monica Lewinsky is "personal" --
just say it (whatever "it" may be) is a "personal" matter -- and that helps to close the curtains as quickly as possible.

We probably won't know everything -- do we ever?

But what you accurately pointed out does make me wonder if Paula Broadwell is being set up to take a fall
for something that may be hidden or may remain hidden.

this isn't too surprising. Lots of small pieces of information, but nothing that indicates what is really going on.

There's definitely something else going on about this story we don't know yet.Maybe it's the CLASSIFIED INFO she has on her computer that they are trying to find out where she got it from.Sounds like to me she may have hacked into his computer or he's LYING when he told the authorities he didn't give her any of the information. As they say DRIP DRIP DRIP everyday there's something else
