(IBEW) Members Offer Thanksgiving Help to Hurricane Sandy Victims

Source: IBEW.org

It’s going to be a tough Thanksgiving for the hundreds of thousands of New York and New Jersey residents affected by Hurricane Sandy. Many are entering their third week without power – some without a roof over their head.

“So many people here are facing tough times,” says Third District International Representative Ellen Redmond, who is based in Long Island.

Helping to make sure hurricane-stricken Long Islanders don’t miss out on the holiday is Philadelphia Local 98, which donated approximately 300 Thanksgiving dinners to Island Harvest, the region’s largest food bank.

Says Redmond:

The local called up here and asked what they could do to help. They really wanted to make some kind of contribution to help us out.

It's nice that we did this.

Wish we did more for our members that have been out of work for a year and more.

Because I consider them to be cowardly. Unions have bled for this country, do jobs that are often thankless, stressful and in other ways dangerous to life and limb.

I have never been let down by a good union member. They have decency, and are willing to pay the price for doing the right thing for everyone.

Anti-unionist kiss the ass of management or the rich, rejoicing over the pat on the head and the crumbs. They have no respect for themselves.

When their boss screws them, they find someone to blame who has been outspoken, and when things go right, they ride their coattails to the benefits. But they won't face up to the powerful and take the inevitable lickings.

I'm not talking about those who never had a chance to join, never were able to get into a job that unions made decent. I'm talking about those who have never thought this through, just listen to what their bosses tell them and cower like dogs with their tails between their legs. Then lash out at their fellows who are union and stand for all.
