Teamsters give GOP first major donation in years with $45,000 to RNC
Source: Washington Post
The RNC, which is facing fundraising woes, received the contribution, the maximum allowed from the unions political action committee, just days after former president Donald Trump met with Teamsters leadership for the second time in January.
The Teamsters also sent $30,000 to the Democratic National Committee.
Neither the Teamsters nor the RNC immediately responded to a request for comment.

(597 posts)As your link shows, the Teamsters in previous elections have not given anywhere near the same amount of money to Republicans as they have Democrats.
Don't be surprised if the Teamsters decide not to endorse Biden.
ColinC
(8,327 posts)Whereas Dems get millions. So far I dont think this single contribution is enough to worry they will not endorse Biden. If it gets into the higher six figures to the GOP for the total of the year though, I will start being worried.

(597 posts)I don't know why you keep referencing past election cycles.
But just to humor you, in 2020, the Teamsters Union PAC (which is being cited in the article as giving money), gave Republicans only $36,500 throughout the entirety of the 2020 campaign.
https://www.opensecrets.org/political-action-committees-pacs/teamsters-union/C00032979/summary/2020
In just this month, they've given more money than they did the whole 2020 election cycle.
ColinC
(8,327 posts)Maybe wait until the cycle really takes off before drawing conclusions.
All Mixed Up
(597 posts)Your comparing it to previous election cycles seems irrelevant.
Especially with the Teamsters openly meeting with Trump (they did not in 2020 or 2016) and still holding their endorsement of Biden.
This is clearly NOT like previous election cycles so your continued pointing to 'em is irrelevant.
ColinC
(8,327 posts)Making mountains out of molehills. There could be a million reasons strategy-wise why they might have done this. One of those reasons might be they are leaning towards endorsing Trump. There are likely millions of other reasons that dont include that possibility.
All Mixed Up
(597 posts)Because right now they've given more money to the GOP than Democrats and have met with Trump twice discussing their endorsement.
None of that happened in previous election cycles. You know, which you kept mentioning. But I'm game. What are the million other reasons?
ColinC
(8,327 posts)Again unless you are a fortune teller or built a Time Machine, you nor I do not know what the teamsters are going to do.

(10,202 posts)A corporation.
For a long time I refused to believe it. But then my daughter went to work for the Actors' Equity Association (AEA) in LA as a clerk. It became as cruel and arbitrary as any corporation in its attempt to reduce labor costs.
At first they treated their office workers well....Then the corruption set in.
The new president gave herself and her executives huge raises while forcing their own employees to clock every minute of their work day and instituted draconian survalance methods. The union fought against the unionization of their own employees. It was a union for actors that didn't want their office staff to unionize.
Anyway, the job became horrible. People were quitting left and right. They didn't hire replacements and just loaded more and more work on the staff that remained. My daughter would call upset about how badly they treated her. She finally quit and it was the best thing for her.
One of the things the new president initiated was to make all the clerks clock in at their desk computers instead of at the clock. So it took about 10 minutes just to walk back to the desks area then about 15 minutes for the computer to boot up and then get the clock-in program running. So it required 30 minutes more of unpaid work in the mornings. And then it took just as long to clock out, close down your computer and walk to where the old time clock was. So they got another 30 minutes of unpaid labor, a total hour of labor they didn't pay for.
It was just so weird how when that new president came in, she destroyed moral, cut benefits and pay and generally was as tyrannical as any corporate idiot.

(2,264 posts)These Teamsters (that support donald dump) think that they're somehow very intelligent and smarter than your average bear when in reality they're trampling on the legacy of Union members from the past that risked their lives to let them get to where they are. Short sighted self-centered fools. A big argument is before the SC right now concerning organizing.

I will say it is not unusual for large entitys to donate to both sides of an election just to cover their bets and keep all the members happy.

(45,514 posts)Trump met with them and somehow they must have liked it enough to donate money. Our side has plenty of good labor reform policies and should talk/listen to these truckers to earn their votes. This year is a tremendous opportunity for Dems to showcase how our party helps workers of all types while the other party spews BS.

(8,344 posts)The American Rescue plan bailed their irresponsible leadership for years of underfunding their employee pension fund. President Biden and the Democrats in congress gave them over 35 billion dollars. There were ZERO Republican votes supporting this. Fuck the teamsters and fuck Sean Obrien.

(6,617 posts)Not necessarily because the members will leave but more because they keep supporting F'ing moron legislatures that are bent on destroying any labor rights that were fought and died for since the late 1800's. It's only taken 40 years to undue almost all of it. There is so little labor support in government left thanks to the repugs. Nice going Teamsters for putting more nails in the coffin.

(7,636 posts)Our union concentrated on incumbents who supported "our issues," mostly having to do with the Postal Service. The support probably came out 2-1 in favor of Democrats. As I recall the aggregate contributions added up to a few million a year. NALC also supported candidates with phone banks and door knocking.
