CNN Republicans are taking aim at President Joe Biden for proclaiming Easter Sunday as the Transgender Day of Visibility, though the two days only coincided this year by chance. The Transgender Day of Visibility, which was started in 2009 as a day of awareness to celebrate the successes of transgender and gender-nonconforming people, is held annually on March 31. The date of Easter, meanwhile, changes from year to year.
But several Republicans seized on Bidens proclamation to attack the president. It is appalling and insulting that Joe Bidens White House
formally proclaimed Easter Sunday as Trans Day of Visibility, former President Donald Trumps campaign said in a statement. House Speaker Mike Johnson said the Biden administration had betrayed the central tenet of Easter in a post on X. The American people are taking note.
White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said in a statement Saturday, As a Christian who celebrates Easter with family, President Biden stands for bringing people together and upholding the dignity and freedoms of every American. Sadly, its unsurprising politicians are seeking to divide and weaken our country with cruel, hateful, and dishonest rhetoric. President Biden will never abuse his faith for political purposes or for profit, Bates said.
In this years presidential proclamation, Biden said the Transgender Day of Visibility honors the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans. Transgender Americans are part of the fabric of our Nation, the proclamation said, adding that they deserve, and are entitled to, the same rights and freedoms as every other American, including the most fundamental freedom to be their true selves.

There's no bottom to the GOP's utter stupidity.

(52,286 posts)And I assume "betrayed" is meant to invoke the betrayal of jesus and put Biden in that role.
But what's this "central tenet" of Easter about? Not meaning to offend anyone as I am not Christian, but does jesus's death and resurrection story somehow involve hatred of transgender people?

(2,572 posts)Jesus was criticized by the Saducees and Pharisees for going to symposia with the "Greeks". That term was a bit of code for "hanging out with those nasty Queer furriners". Besides philosophical discussions, symposia also featured boozy drinking games, banquets, music and rowdy carousing....in other words: fun. So Jesus reminded them that the Greeks needed his message just as much as his own religious leaders did.
My suspicion is that his reply was more along the line of "Oh, take the stick out of your ass!"

Easter is determined by solar and lunar events, the calculation of which date back to the dawn of human history. Last year, Eater was on April 9th. Next year, it'll be on April 20th. If 2024 weren't a Leap Year, Easter would be today. Just go enjoy all of the pagan symbolism and the feasting that celebrates the end of winter.
Just to show how much we humans celebrate and observe, here is a site that lists all of the known or popular holidays and observances: https://www.holidays-and-observances.com/

(937 posts)First off, Easter is not a fixed day. It's the first Sunday after the Full Moon following the spring equinox. It can be as early as March 22nd and as late as April 25th. So it just so happened that Easter managed to fall on the same day this Transgender Day of Visibility. But even outside of that, Furthermore, Johnson, or anybody else for that matter, can't complain about tenets of Easter (e.g. Jesus has risen) because Christianity was not the original owner of Easter. It goes back much further than that. Originally it was an Anglo-Saxon pagan festival during the spring equinox that celebrated Eostre. Eostre was the goddess of spring and fertility (meaning growth of plants). Like many other Christian holidays, they took pagan festivals/holidays and replaced it with it with their own. In fact, the Easter Bunny, while it started with German Lutherans, may have origins from paganism. So in a way, they can not complain about this since Easter wasn't even originally theirs.
