Iran on Saturday launched attacks against Israel, according to U.S. officials, escalating long-standing tensions between the two nations that have the potential to trigger a regional war. Iran has begun an airborne attack against Israel, National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a Saturday statement. The United States will stand with the people of Israel and support their defense against these threats from Iran.
Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari said Saturday that Israel would work in close coordination with the U.S. and regional partners to intercept the launches. We are monitoring the threat in the airspace. It is a threat that takes several hours to reach the territory of the State of Israel, he added.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his war cabinet in Tel Aviv, following the announcement of the missile and drone launches, according to the Prime Ministers Office.
International leaders including European Council President Charles Michel, U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Frances foreign ministry publicly condemned Irans attack on Saturday.

The Biden administration is expecting Iran's attack to target Israeli government sites, not civilian or religious sites and not U.S. assets in the area, U.S. officials told NBC News. The administration is anticipating the attack to involve 100 drones, dozens of cruise missiles and dozens of ballistic missiles, one of the officials added.

Iran on Saturday launched attacks against Israel, according to the Israel Defense Forces, escalating long-standing tensions between the two nations that have the potential to trigger a regional war.
Strains between Iran and Israel have been heating up since the start of the war in Gaza in October, and especially over the past several weeks after Iran accused Israel of perpetrating an attack on its consulate in Damascus on April 1. Iranian leaders, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, pledged to retaliate against Israel for the Damascus strike and Israel, in turn, threatened a counterattack of its own. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement in the Damascus attack.
"If Iran attacks from its territory, Israel will react and attack in Iran," Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Israel Katz wrote in a Wednesday post on X, tagging the Ayatollah's X account.
Given Iran's various warnings, the White House had been expecting an Iranian strike and had been communicating with Israel to ensure they would be prepared to defend themselves.

(4,274 posts)has been closer to Putin than is generally often highlighted in western media reports. Bibi and Putin have been very close. It has been a bone of contention with the US about Israel being "soft" on Russia regarding Ukraine. How these things will play into the mix is uncertain but Putin has in the recent past been supportive of "restricting" Iranian activity in Syria.

(17,937 posts)Gives Iran's arch enemies, Saudi and other gulf states, even more reason to form closer ties with Israel. Dilutes the whole Israel vs Palestinians narrative in the eyes of many American voters and validates US military support. But I'm sure there are those who will be pro Iran since Israel always bad, always bad.

Israeli military is tracking approach of more than 100 drones, official says

An Israeli military official told a briefing Saturday night that more than 100 drones had been launched towards Israel from Iran.
Their approach towards Israel is being tracked and all necessary steps were being taken to defend the country, the official added.
The official said Israel was watching other apparatus that Iran potentially could be launching as well.
We are following the other launch capabilities that Iran has at this at this time. I can't confirm anything positive regarding other munitions beyond the drone, explosive drones that Iran has launched at us," the official said.
The official added that the drones were expected to arrive in the following hours. And more waves of drones were possible as time progresses, the official added.
In preparation for what may come, Israel had conducted some GPS scrambling, as well as close Israeli airspace, the official said.
We have a very strong defensive posture in order to address anything flying towards Israel," the official added.

Statement from President Joe Biden on Irans Attacks against the State of Israel
HOME
BRIEFING ROOM
STATEMENTS AND RELEASES
Earlier today, Iranand its proxies operating out of Yemen, Syria and Iraqlaunched an unprecedented air attack against military facilities in Israel. I condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms.
At my direction, to support the defense of Israel, the U.S. military moved aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region over the course of the past week. Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our servicemembers, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles.
Ive just spoken with Prime Minister Netanyahu to reaffirm Americas ironclad commitment to the security of Israel. I told him that Israel demonstrated a remarkable capacity to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks sending a clear message to its foes that they cannot effectively threaten the security of Israel.
Tomorrow, I will convene my fellow G7 leaders to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Irans brazen attack. My team will engage with their counterparts across the region. And we will stay in close touch with Israels leaders. And while we have not seen attacks on our forces or facilities today, we will remain vigilant to all threats and will not hesitate to take all necessary action to protect our people.

Pretty stupid IMO, gives Israel the green light to go after Iran's nuclear bomb facilities and their oil infrastructure where they get 40%+ of their govt budget.
