Chicago shooting kills 8-year-old girl and wounds 10 people including small children, police say

Updated 9:36 AM CDT, April 14, 2024

CHICAGO (AP) — Eleven people standing outside a family gathering Saturday night were shot including a young girl who was killed in what Chicago police believe was gang-related violence on the city’s South Side, police said Sunday.

Four victims were children. An 8-year-old girl was shot in the head and died, while a 1-year-old boy and a 8-year-old boy were each shot multiple times and listed in critical condition. A 9-year-old boy was also injured with a graze wound to his finger and hospitalized, police said Sunday.

The department’s Sunday statement updated the number of shooting victims to 11 from 8 and gave new ages for the victims compared with a news conference late Saturday.

No one was in custody Sunday.

1. GD guns. Honestly? Does anyone really think that even WITH the gang problem we'd have as many deaths

without all those GD guns?

I can't say I really believe in a heaven, but it would be nice to think at least doggy (and other animal) heavens exist and that maybe innocent children like these might get to be there with those happy, loving pets.

"gun" violence would decrease by 90%.

It has nothing to do with a belief in doggy heaven.

4. Grief and anger

Metaphor. I think that the piles of teddy bears that are often left at the site of the death of a child or children stem from the wish to convey some sense of comfort in a senseless situation. To envision a deceased child comforted by a teddy bear or heavenly pet is a way of expressing grief. Grief and anger over gun deaths, and over gang violence and domestic violence and mass shootings, are intimately related. We are all of us here trying to move past grief and anger, and the insidious 'thoughts and prayers', to effective political action. Helping one another cross from grief and anger to action is what we can do together.

11. Gangs have been around for decades a century even. Rampant guns for a decade or two.

The correlation is clear.

Guns have replaced the crack epidemic with much worse outcomes.

Used to be able to buy guns from Sears catalogs with no age verification or background check and have them delivered by US Mail.

What one does see today is a decrease some have for the value of life.

In the past, incidents like the Valentine's Day Massacre outraged society and lead to the evendentual downfall of Capone. Today, we send thoughts and prayers. This latest tragedy will soon be forgotten.

5. "This was not a random act of violence.

"This was not a random act of violence. It was likely gang-related," Chicago Police Area One Deputy Chief Don Jerome said. "The offenders' actions, make no mistake, are horrific and unacceptable in our city."

So will the gangbanger's parents be charged with accessory to murder and imprisoned?

That would be a start.

Rather, I applaud their convictions.

It's about time That lousy parenting is not excused.

The driver of the getaway car is just as guilty as the shooter in a drive by murder, the same principle applies.

17. They weren't charged with lousy parenting

They were charged with specific violations of state gun statutes.

If prosecutors in this shooting have evidence of the same, I'm sure they'll file charges. It's only one county over from Highland Park, after all.
