Source: Washington Post
Three members of a U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force were fatally shot during a standoff Monday while trying to serve a warrant in Charlotte. A Charlotte police officer died hours later from injuries he suffered during the incident. Four other law enforcement officers were wounded, and the person they were pursuing was killed.
The task force members were attempting to serve a warrant for possession of a firearm by a felon when they were met with gunfire at a Charlotte residence, police said.

Statement from President Joe Biden on the Shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina
Earlier today, four brave law enforcement officers including a Deputy U.S. Marshal were killed in the line of duty. They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harms way to protect us. We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded.
When a law enforcement officer puts on that shield in the morning and heads out the door, their family members dread the phone call the very call that came today. Its like losing a piece of your soul. To the families of those we lost: Jill and I, and all Americans, are here for you. And we will always be here for you.
We must do more to protect our law enforcement officers. That means funding them so they have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe. And it means taking additional action to combat the scourge of gun violence. Now. Leaders in Congress need to step up so that we ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require safe storage of guns, and pass universal background checks and a national red flag law. Enough is enough.
May God Bless these fallen heroes.

(12,228 posts)I believe I found the guy's name. He was arrested in OK on a narcotics charge and then some, and released in 2022.
Must have moved to NC.
Just guessing, though.

(12,016 posts)Mr. Hughes was wanted for Possession of a Firearm by Felon and Felony Flee to Elude (2 counts) out of Lincoln County, North Carolina, the release says.
Hughes Corrections record in North Carolina says he served 2 years and 3 months for possession of a firearm by a felon as well as speeding, eluding arrest, dating to 2012.
He also has convictions for reckless driving, another possession of a firearm by a felon, and a post-release revocation, Corrections records show.

strict gun control legislation, including an assault weapons ban? I'm old enough to remember when they used to, standing next to Clinton as he signed the AWB.
I'm not sure that's the case anymore. These organizations and people seem to have decided that having more guns on the street is in their own and the nation's interest. That's their choice.

(2,335 posts)over $100,000 and great benefits. That's what attracts these folks to take the risk. The proliferation of firearms is causing a greater need to have more and more officers. It's a never-ending cycle. Then you have a fat, orange madman throwing a match on the whole mess.
