Revealed: Tyson Foods dumps millions of pounds of toxic pollutants into US rivers and lakes

Source: The Guardian

Tue 30 Apr 2024 06.00 EDT

Tyson Foods dumped millions of pounds of toxic pollutants directly into American rivers and lakes over the last five years, threatening critical ecosystems, endangering wildlife and human health, a new investigation reveals.

Nitrogen, phosphorus, chloride, oil and cyanide were among the 371m lb of pollutants released into waterways by just 41 Tyson slaughterhouses and mega processing plants between 2018 and 2022.

According to research by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), the contaminants were dispersed in 87bn gallons of wastewater – which also contains blood, bacteria and animal feces – and released directly into streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands relied on for drinking water, fishing and recreation. The UCS analysis, shared exclusively with the Guardian, is based on the most recent publicly available water pollution data Tyson is required to report under current regulations.

The wastewater was enough to fill about 132,000 Olympic-size pools, according to a Guardian analysis.

From the OP link:

This seriously affects the midwestern states, and it's especially bad on the Arkansas-Oklahoma border. Also the Nebraska-Iowa border has several dangerous locations.

and especially like the extra zest that pollutants give to their meals.

Wonder if there's any link to mental deficiencies from what is eaten. I know correlation/causation, but one can lead to the other that can lead to the one...

Even the oceans - especially the oceans. It can't be treated as a political issue.

Maybe the red state hunters and outdoorsmen aren't paying attention, but the rest of us are.

If you've ever seen film about how chicken factories are run, you should not be surprised. I lived in North Carolina years ago and the stories I heard made my stomach flip. I haven't bought anything Tyson or Purdue in decades. I rarely eat chicken but when I do I'll pay top dollar for free range organic chicken. I can afford to do that because I don't eat it often.
