Israel suspected over Iran nuclear programme inquiry leaks

Source: Guardian

Israel is suspected of carrying out a series of leaks implicating Iran in nuclear weapons experiments in an attempt to raise international pressure on Tehran and halt its programme.

Western diplomats believe the leaks may have backfired, compromising a UN-sanctioned investigation into Iran's past nuclear activities and current aspirations.

The latest leak, published by the Associated Press (AP), purported to be an Iranian diagram showing the physics of a nuclear blast, but scientists quickly pointed out an elementary mistake that cast doubt on its significance and authenticity. An article in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists declared: "This diagram does nothing more than indicate either slipshod analysis or an amateurish hoax."

The leaked diagram raised questions about an investigation being carried out by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors after it emerged that it formed part of a file of intelligence on alleged Iranian nuclear weapons work held by the agency.

1. This is the Iraq WMD and OSP-AIPAC deception redux.

The neocons did the same thing ten years ago in their efforts to justify the invasion of Iraq. There was a related deception campaign run out of the office of the DC Mossad Chief of Station to salt Pentagon files with false Iran WMD intel. Mossad provided AIPAC with data that was planted in an effort to deceive and influence U.S. policy, according to the indictment of Lt. Col. Larry Franklin.

Larry Franklin worked for Doug Feith and Wurmser at the notorious Office of Special Plans (OSP) operating under the DoD Undersecretary for Intelligence as a disinformation shop set up by Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle. The American public heard little about this Israeli espionage case, and it never entered a wider national dialogue about U.S. Mideast policy.

My, how little things change.

3. "Whoever did this has undermined the IAEA's credibility and made it harder for it to do its work."

Sooooo.... If the IAEA's findings are not credible, they should be discounted when determining future actions against Iran. Is that the rub?

And also, "see! We're not letting them inspect us! They have no credibility!"

6. All the IAEA did was inquire with Iran about the leak

is an Israeli job and not the work of some other country that doesn't want Iran to get nukes (e.g. every Sunni controlled country). It certainly doesn't sound like Israel when words like slipshod or amatuerish are used.

Of course, whenever these BS stories come out, the media runs with it and the average American thinks Iran has its finger on the trigger and can't wait to nuke the universe.

I bet most Americans still think Iraq had WMD, among those that remember the war that is.
